My husband and I are going to begin our house search.... Can anyone tell me about these areas? We don't have children yet, so the school district isn't a huge concern. Basically we want to be a nice, safe neighborhood close to transportation to get into the city. Any advice or info you have would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!! Erica

Be careful with Hicksville...it tends to have gangs. If it's Hicksville with the Bethpage School District then it's ok...
Where in Hicksville are there gangs? ? ? I live by Broadway Mall and my daughter goes to school here. I have NEVER seen gangs here . . . .

Sooo, then my next question would be...
Fh works in LI, I work in the city (for now) and I would want to be as close to the city as possible, and also close to the railroad. What would be the best towns to look into? I am working with a homoebuyers program, and I thought I was limited to certain areas, but I can look anywhere in Nassau. FH does not want Suffolk County, he says its too far.
Thanks ladies for all of your opinions so far
you should check out westbury and east meadow schools. taxes are still decent in these areas. only thing about east meadow is that it's not close to any trains, but you have the westbury and merrick stations to choose from. hicksville and levittown are the last few places on long island with still decent good school districts and low taxes (about $5k-$6k).
Westbury isn't the best school district. The area of New Cassel goes to Westbury school district and it isn't the greatest area. If you can get Westbury address but with Carle Place school district then you're okay. Some of Westbury goes to East Meadow school district too. You have to see.

There are the Bloods, Crypts and and off shoot of the Bloods are the Pink Panthers. My friend taught summer school there this past summer and was warned of them and being close to Hicksville (in Bethpage) we get constant warnings.

I went out to Hicksville two weeks ago, (FH works close by) to look at the neighborhood. FH had also heard about gangs in the area from his coworkers.
The one town that continues to pop up no matter what board I am on is Levittown. The search in NYC is so daunting It will probably bee another 5 years before we find a house we can afford to buy and fall in love with at the same time
Thanks for all of your opinions ladies

FSIL Lives in Hicksville and there are no gangs in her neighborhood. Hicksville is pretty large though - so I would drive by the areas and see how you like it.

If you say so (and by no means am I trying to 'start' anything) but all I am saying is that where I live in Hicksville and where I have been in HIcksville there is NO sign of 'gangs' what so ever. Nor have I ever gotten any warnings from anyone at any time including my daughters elementary school. I know that Hicksville is big, but you can have gangs where ever you go. For instance, my mother works in Great Neck and she heard that last school year there was a gang incident at Great Neck North high school. Which is an EXTREMLY prodominant neighborhood.
Unfortunatly there are problems with every neighborhood. Whether it be taxes, school district, attitude of the people in the area, to close to 'this' to far away from 'that', to much of 'this', to little of 'that', not enough back yard, not enough house, not enough garage space, etc. ect. ect.

I totally agree with your comments, anything can happen anywhere.

I am bumping this thread. I would like to know why Elmont is a no? Fi and I are looking now for a home, but i am from the Bx and know very little about LI. School system is important to us since we have a 6 year old.
What about Uniondale?
TIA
IMHO, places to avoid would be . . . .
Hempstead Uniondale Freeport Baldwin Amityville Roosevelt (sp?) South Valley Stream
I have a 7 1/2 year old daughter and FH and I won't even CONSIDER any of these places. I have heard not so good things about them.
Apologies in advance for anyone who might disagree with me. Like I said, I have heard not so good things about these places
I agree, except with Amityville. There are VERY nice parts of Amityville and Amity Harbor. I just wouldnt send my kids to public school.
Same can be said for Freeport and Baldwin....
Sorry, that's what I ment. I didn't put that though FH and I refuse to buy a house and pay taxes and then have to pay for a private/catholic school because the school district is bad. We just think that it's pointless. . . .
In relation to school district, their is one central high school district in Valley Stream, so if you are concerned about the district, the schools in South Valley Stream would be the same as the schools in North Valley Stream. And, South Valley Stream is actually the Gibson/Hewlett area which many people prefer. I would stay away from Western Valley Stream, which borders Rosedale. The neighborhood east of Rockaway Avenue is still very nice.
