Email Save-the-Date?

Email Save-the-Date?

Is it considered in poor taste to email the save-the date? We are really working with a tight budget and could spend that money elsewhere.

Let me know what you think...

everyone is gonna have different opinions about this...personally i wouldn't do it...one big reason is that ALOT of close family members on both side, especially the older guests dont even use computers

I don't know how i'd feel about an emailable one - truly...

I can recommend Vistaprint.com though - their stuff is VERY affordable and doesn't look as if they are cheap...ya know?

I've used a lot of their stuff and you can do magnets for a very good price!

Just a thought!

Welcome!!!

I don't think it's a good idea. Not everyone has an email address and some that do don't check it all the time. I think it's a really important announcement and that it deserves something more official.

Do you need to send a STD? I feel like if your date isn't a holiday weekend, you really don't need to send them. But that's JMO.

I don't think STDs need to cost a lot of money at all. Have you looked into making them online, at vistaprint or shutterfly or something like that? They are always having sales and you could probably get 75-100 for $50.

Or, make them yourself! All the STD really needs to say is your names, date, location (as in Long Island, NY). You can buy cardstock and print them yourself for a very small amount of money. A friend who knows Photoshop well may also be able to help you make something a little fancier if you desire.

yeah good point, everyone thinks you HAVE to send out STD's, honestly you really don't...if its not in your budget just dont do it...people got along fine without them for a long time, STD's are more of a new thing.

Re: Email Save-the-Date?

Hi there,

I emailed close friends and family with the date, but I am also sending vistaprint save-the-dates to everyone. I just ordered them, plus matching thank you notes for my engagement party. The order included the envelopes and backside printing in B&W. 100 announcement cards + envelopes cost $37.49 and there was no tax. We opted for the faster shipping which cost an addt'l $15 for the whole order (140 announcement cards and 100 thank you's). The cards are very cute - a tux and a wedding dress with a message on front and back. You can get matching envelopes, but I chose the free plain ones.

I'd considered making my own, but we need to buy a new printer and then the paper, so the immediate gratification part of me just went ahead and ordered them! However, I think you could do them yourself and have very lovely cards! Part of me wishes I did that, but lazy part of me is glad I didn't . I will be doing my own wedding invites I think, so I'm 'saving my energy'

i agree.. you really don't need them. if they aren't in your budget you can skip them. maybe just send something to your OOS guests so they can make travel plans ahead of time.

my cousin did this to save money and it was fine. She emailed all the younger people which took care of the friends and and younger family. for the older adults, it was just word of mouth from the kids which didn't bother anybody. plus their parents talk to the older family relatives so it worked out. i didnt have any problems with receiving one.

Re: Email Save-the-Date?

We did an e-mail save the date for our close friends and bridal party only. Our moms notified all the close family on each side either in person or on the phone.

We had intended to do regular save the date cards, but couldn't get the guest list ready on time

Now I'm glad that we didn't do save the dates after all. We are still making some last minute changes. Anyone who receives a STD, has to receive an invitation. Just something to keep in mind.

I did that, i didn't think anything of it, i was excited when i booked a hall and told everyone. Some people don't send save the dates at all, don't sweat it

If you can't work it into your budget you do not need to have them. In our circle of friends and family we were the first ones to do this so it is not something that is very common.

I wouldn't do it. Post cards cost us $30 (for 300 post cards)+ 23 cents postage each.

You could do email for friends, but family and extended family might raise an eyebrow.

Re: Email Save-the-Date?

I wouldn't bother with an e-mail, it's not broad enough. As for standard STD's, if you don't want them, you dont' have to have them, but if you feel it's a nice touch, or you want to test out your address list, there's no reason for it to be a major expense.

Get regular cardstock and make postcards. All you have to do is print 25 sheets and cut them in quarters. You get 100 for about $35, which includes postage. You'll have 225 sheets left, and can use the rest for thank you notes.

I'm on a budget as well. I don't think they are necessary. Why don't you just send them to the guests that live out of town?

Re: Email Save-the-Date?

I think that if I couldn't send one by mail- i wouldn't send it at all and would rely on word of mouth as to when the date is. If you are having mostly local people- dont worry about sending one and contact the OOTs to tell them the date. If you have a lot of OOT, then consider mailing them.

My friend created a website on www.weddingchannel.com and emailed that out as a save the date. It was cute, showed she put some effort into it and was FREE!

STDs are optional. I think it's a nice touch if you are having a lot of town guests. That said, we didn't do them and I have never received a hard copy STD regardless of location. With the exception of one e-mail message, it's always been word of mouth.

Re: Email Save-the-Date?

DO IT! Save the Dates are so not necessary... you can do something like an evite and ask your parents/friends to pass on the word to non-computer people. I dont think your grandparents will need a magnet or postcard to figure out when your wedding is....

I'm sorry but I wouldn't do the email save-the-date either. I found magnets for 50 cents each. To save postage, I'm mailing them with my engagement party thank yous.
