Enagement Party Meltdown--how many is too many?

Enagement Party Meltdown--how many is too many?

My fiancee and I are planning an engagement party at KOC in Seaford for March 2014. We are going tonight to see the place and talk about dates with a coordinater, so I needed to finalize our list. After adding his list to mine, we have 165 people!! I feel at this rate we might as well add the rest and have our wedding!! I have mostly family so it's difficult for me to cut my list, while he has a lot of close friends.
How many is average for an engagement?
I'm figuring we'll be paying at least 35/plate there, which is over 5500 just for an E-party!! I'm having a meltdown! HELP!!

We had about 100 people at ours but I cooked for DAYS and had it in my parents backyard so that it didnt cost us a fortune. We are also having an almost 4 year engagment so that was a while ago

For our engagement party we just had immediate family and some friends. We did it at our FH parents house and we saved money that way.

We just had immediate family only!
My close friends all went to a bar one night to celebrate after our engagement but it wasn't a party.

Our e-pic was just close family members and the bridal party. We had about 40

We had about 60 people, which seemed like a lot to me. I can't imagine 165! That's a lot. If you can't cut some people, I would probably scratch it and go to a bar to celebrate, as others have suggested. That's a lot of money to spend, and you're right, you might as well hold the wedding! This is just my opinion of course Maybe look into other places? Is there a community center or something that can be rented out cheap? My parents threw ours, but I can tell you that it was held at a beautiful community house in Suffolk that only cost about $300 to rent for a few hours and my parents paid for catering and wine/beer. Just a thought... Good luck!

Oh man. We had 50 people which included immediate family, his one uncle and two cousins and our friends, that's it. I had wanted to invite extended family but than it would have been about 150 people so that was not happening. I think we spent about $2000 but we had a friend do the food and had it in his parents backyard

Remember not everyone will say yes, we invited 65 and wound up with 52ish.

we invited 120 people, and had about 90 people come. our list was cut strictly to people on long island who were close family (aunts, uncles, 1st cousins) and the bridal party. i was definitely stressing about how much money it was costing us (we had it in a restaurant), but it all worked out great. good luck

We had about 100. Both our parents split the tab, so we all chose 35 people to invite each (my parents had 35, his parents had 35, and we had 35). Honestly, it ended up being mostly immediate family (we're italian and irish!) and our immediate friends aka more than just bridal party since we see them all on a daily basis.

We had 60 people which included immediate family and close friends! It definitely does cost out of pocket, but you also have to factor in the money you make back in gifts. We were able to start a bank account together with the money we received that we've been using to help pay for our wedding. It depends on your budget!!

I am in the same boat!!! My FH's parents are throwing the party and INSISTED that it be in a hall. They INSISTED that we guarantee 75 and now they're INSISTING that we invite WAY more than 75 people. Not to mention that they refuse to pay for the invitations, centerpieces and favors.... which means that this engagement party that I didn't want to begin with will now cost me money. I wanted something intimate, maybe 30 people at a restaurant or something. Now I feel like we're having a mini wedding and I am kind of embarrassed to be inviting all of these people. I feel like I'm asking for more money/gifts and the whole thing is too showy. I bought the invitations already but I am going to let my FH's parents know that there simply wont be centerpieces/favors. Oh, and to make things worse, there is a dance floor but they don't want to pay for a DJ! So how ridiculous is this going to look that I am inviting all of these people to an engagement party at a hall with a dance floor and no music!!!!
