I recently sent out my engagement annoucements. I have a group of close friends that have not responded in any way. They have not acknowledged even getting my annoucements. When I asked one of the girls she said that she got it but in her culture (Persian)people don't do things like that. I think that is incredibly rude. I meant to not even acknowledge that they received it. I guess I should forget receiving gifts but I just find it very hurtful. I mean why are they treating me as if I'm part of their culture when I'm not. By the way they know I'm registered and that some friends have gotten me gifts.

I don't think you will get a lot of gifts unless you have an E-party. In fact, gifts are not required for engagement parties, just weddings.
I did not have an e-party. I have a huge (and incredibly generous) family, but I got only about $500 in cash from family friends, toasting flutes and a cake knife. I would not expect my friends (who are mostly students) to give me anything.

i'm sorry! the only thing i can suggest is that if they are young and you are perhaps the first in your group of friends getting married perhaps they don't know how to react to an engagement announcement!
i wouldn't take it too personally!

When I got engaged, I thought the whole world should feel as happy as I did. But the truth is, it's not the biggest deal to even some of our closest friends. People will be happy for you, but you can't expect it to be non-stop celebrating. Try to relish the times when friends do make a fuss b/c it won't happen all the time.

I agree witih am.... we just had ou e-party & there were some very generous gifts, but some very frugal ones as well. Honestly, I am just happy when someone congratulates us & wishes us well. JMO.

I really don't expect any response.. now the invitations.. yes.. i expect a response.

I agree with clueless bride, I think people tend to get envious when someone gets engaged. Especially girls who don't have a significant other. I have always been happy for my friends when they have ahd some sort of accomplishment in their lives. I still think its odd though that some people are sending really nice gifts while others just don't respond. By the way my rude group of freinds, they are all mega rich.
