engagement parties

I know that my mom&dad want to throw us an engagement party ......and I am pretty sure that my FH's parents will want to help as well...

My mom was thinking end of january...... (we can't do feb as my grandmother is is in FL that entire month)
but now my mom is thinking well maybe march?
Is there a customary amount of time 'after' the proposal to have the engagement party?

Nope... We got engaged 11/22/06 and we had our engagement party 4/14/07 to avoid the harsh weather of the winter so our guests who were coming from far away wouldn't have to drive thru snow.

i dont think so..but id def do Jan-Mar if your having it out bc more places will be willing to work w. you as for pricing goes!

I have heard that the engagement party should be between 1 year and 6 months before the wedding. I had mine 6 months before the wedding.

i just dont think it should be in the same year as the wedding but thats JMO.....we got engaged in July 07 and had our eparty in Sept 07 - we are getting married December 08

JMO: I would never have an e-party the same year of the wedding. It's way to much to ask. You will, have your shower a few months before the wedding, and them your wedding. That's a lot of money your guest will have to shell out.

Unless you have a party and request no gifts.

I always thought it should be closer to your engagement than toyour wedding...we got engaged in April and had our party in August. OUr wedding isnt until 2009 lol

We got engaged in May 06 and had our e-party in October 06, so about 5 months later.

Wedding was in November 07, so just over a year later than the e-party.

We got engaged at the end of April and had our e-party in the middle of July...i think it should be close to the date u got engaged...i would have done it sooner but one of my good friends was having hers in June and i didnt want it to be too much on my friends to have both in the same month so i waited...

thanks for everyone's opinion.. we definitely do not want it in the same year as the wedding....... we got engaged this month.. so my mom was thining the end of January... after the holidays etc.... FMIL thinks end of march.... either way. its a year before the wedding.. I guess I just prefer it being as close to the actual engagement as possible?? does that sound odd?

Odd that the engagement party should be close to the engagement ? Definitely not.

we got engaged in July and had our e-party in October...either month is fine, just make sure you give yourself enough time to prepare.

we got engaged oct 27th of this year and we arent thinking of having our engagement party till april or may.. my fmil is throwing it and wants to have it outside, so were waiting for the weather to become nice.. i was worried that it would be to far away from the actual engagement.. but right now its to crazy with all the holidays and im worried about the weather in january and february because id have people driving in from all over. so i think either month would be an appropriate time to have one

We were engaged 12/23/06 and we waited til June 07 for two reasons:

1. We wanted to have it outdoors so we needed to wait til nicer weather

2. FH's brother was getting married in May and we were both in the BP and we felt like it might be a little unfair to take the attention away from them.

I think that as long as it is a year away from the wedding date, it's fine.

I dont think so...we got engaged May-06, had our engagement party Sept -06 and got married a year after.

My parents thought at one point that we should have waited to have our e-party, but I wanted to celebrate the fact that we were engaged!! So, we were engaged in November and our party was in January (of 06)

DOn't think so...we had two--one families mainly (NY) two months after our engagement and the other mainly friends (DC where we live) 5 months after....

Yea, I am ok with either January or March.. because either way it's more than a year before the wedding.... and if its' January.. it's 2 mos after the engagement and if it's March it's 4 mos after.. so it's not too far from the engagement or too close to the wedding
