We have been engaged 30 days as of tomorrow. Are we SUPPOSED to have an engagement party? If so who is responsible for that? Cause quite honestly if we do it ourselves it seems like a mini reception. UGH. Might as well save that for the wedding budget....

Re: Engagement Party?
I don't think that you have to but if you can afford it, it can be as formal or casual as you want it to be. I'm not sure but either set of parents may host it.

Re: Engagement Party?
We had one and it was at the Meadow Club in Port Jeff...My parents threw it for us...But I agree that it can be whatever you want...I would have been happy with something at the house...

you most certainly do not have to have one, its a matter of preference. we chose not to have one bc it was going to eat away at our wedding budget and definitely would have felt like a mini-reception. we would have had too many people to invite for a house party and we couldn't imagine paying the prices per person we were getting for a restaurant/hall party. good luck with whatever you do and happy planning. ~lacey

Re: Engagement Party?
we had ours at a KNights of Columbus that my brothers belong to and it was wonderful...It was just a chance for our extended family and friends to meet each other and to see us!! I loved my e-party

Re: Engagement Party?
I would actually like to have an engagement party but want everyone to pay for it...like if everyone went out to dinner and chipped in for thier meal. Basically just a dinner out with everyone. How do I word something like that? Did that make sense?!

I don't think it would be right to invite people out to celebrate and then ask them to pay..sorry

Re: Engagement Party?
It really is an engagement dinner. Like going out for someones birthday and everyone pays but the b-day person.
As we told people they kept saying, 'We have to go out to dinner and celebrate.' So this dinner would be killing all those dinners with one.

IT IS NOT SOMETHING THAT YOU ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE. ITS REALLY UP TO YOU. I BELIEVE THAT BOTH PARENTS ARE SUPPOSED TO PAY.

Re: Engagement Party?
My real question is...
If I wanted to have it in that informal, 'Hey let's all go out to dinner to celebrate our engagement' where everyone pays for their own dinner as if we were just going out to dinner......How do I word that in an invite? How do I convey that this is just an informal dinner for us all to get together and everyone pays for thier share or the bill gets divided evenly?

Re: Engagement Party?
We have the same dilemma about having one or not. If we do, we'll host and keep it informal. But we're leaning towards not to use the money towards the wedding instead. Maybe you could do an evite to keep it casual and say something like ' we're so excited, we're going out to celebrate' a table will be reserved for those of you who want to join us. Or something like that, its hard to word it to let them know they are paying for it. Good luck!

Re: Engagement Party?
you do not have to have one...we didnt ...part of me wanted to, but most of me realized that i couldnt ask people for an engagement gift, wedding gift, shower gift and any other gift that should come up... it becomes a lot, my parents were totally against it...BUT if you do have one I dont think others should pay- if you just want to go out to dinner with a small intimate amount of people maybe you guys can pay or split three ways parents and you...

Re: Engagement Party?
We are having a big backyard party. Mostly family and close friends. Both sets of parents are paying for it. I feel a little guilty about having people buy so many gifts (between the eparty, shower, and wedding) so we really tried to play down the gift thing and have people come just to celebrate. We'll see how that goes.

Re: Engagement Party?
Thanks everyone for all your advice. Unfortunately we don't have a front or back yard. We have a porch with a bbq. My parents live upstairs and we live in the downstairs apt. I guess we are just going to let this one go for now.
Thanks again.

Re: Engagement Party?
Just our immediate family went to dinner. That is what we wanted. We did not want a large party.
