Engagement Party

My mom wants to throw me and the FH an engagement party. I don't know how i really feel about them, does anyone have any thoughts??

Re: Engagement Party

its your personal preference. some girls have them and others don't.

personally for me, i am having one, but just immediate family. its just something nice to acknowledge the engagement and have our families meet for the first time (aunts, uncles, cousins, etc). Plus its always nice to get cash gifts to help pay for deposits!

Re: Engagement Party

at first i did not want one at all.. but now that i see how much it is going to cost me for wedding, i can really use some money that people are going to give us as presents. I dont want to sound greedy because i am not, but we are paying for it on our own, and can really use the extra money. I really dont know i am up in the air about it. i figured i would just see what other brides were doing.

thanks for your help!

Re: Engagement Party

Don't do it just for the pure fact of getting some $$$. Do it if you really want to celebrate with your friends and family. I had one and it was so much fun, everyone had a blast.

From the begining i was really against the whole engagement party idea. So i guess i should stick with it, and save my 'rents some money and not have one.

thanks for the help!

I'm having one, but it's just going to be our immediate families. I didn't want one, but my mother thought it was a good time to have our extended families meet.

We didn't have one... those who wanted to... gave a gift anyway. Mostly $$ since we aren't registered, but we also got our toasting flutes and cake server set already.

Re: Engagement Party

I'm for the engagement party. I like throwing parties, and for me it's just another excuse! Plus the wedding isn't for 2 years, so I think it's a good way to celebrate now before everything starts getting crazy. Someone told me the engagement party is going to be the most fun of all the wedding events because everything is so relaxed, and you really get to enjoy it.

its fun, everyone shares in your happiness. and if your mom wants to do it it will make her happy as well. really nothing to lose.

Re: Engagement Party

We were going to, but we decided against it, it would just be too much money with all the other expenses. I think we're going to try to have the rehearsal dinner at the place where we wanted the e-party... we got a few gifts, mostly money from family but a couple of nice thoughtful gifts when we got engaged. Plus not everyone even gives gifts at an engagement party, they say it's not expected but I would never go to one without giving a gift.

Re: Engagement Party

if your parents r willing to throw u an engagement party maybe they will be willing to invest the money they would have spent into a 4 or 12 month cd (or any # of months in between) & then when it comes due give you the money to help you for the wedding. parents tend to like when there kids come up with ideas like this.

Re: Engagement Party

well i told my parents that instead of spending the money on a party they could save it and give it towards the wedding, and they didnt answer me.. lol
