I am having an engagement party, esp since my FH and I want to wait until Oct 2012 to get married. Since it is a long time away, we wanted something to celebrate now

If your engagement is on the shorter side, then I do not think it is necessary to do an engagement party.

i got engaged in april and had a party in october...our parents paid for the party...we just had family and bridal party but we went all out with a dj and floral centerpieces. if it was up to my FI and I, we would have just had a small dinner with a few close guests...

We're having one in April. We're paying for it, but we plan on having at at FH's aunts house to cut the cost.

I think we might do one in May at FH mom's house. Getting catered, buy some drinks and a cake. I really want one for some reason. But if we do it we are paying for it ourselves but I think FMIL will help a bit.
