So my engagement party is coming up on March 29, and invitations are going out next week. We are having it at Verdi's of Westbury and are inviting about 135 people. My question is, we are not registering for this party because our wedding is next year and we want to register for the things we want closer to the bridal shower. Does this give the wrong impression and make it seem that we just want money as a gift?
Also, my friend who registered for her engagement party ended up ONLY getting things from her registry and when it came time for her bridal shower there was nothing left and she had to re-register.
Someone help me please!

Re: Engagement Party - Advice Needed
I had the same thoughts for my e-party. FH and I ended up registering for things on crate & barrel & Fortunoff. We didn't register for big things like our china. It was a vague list just so people would be happy we registered, since both families were asking. People will either buy their own gift whether their is a registry or not, give you money or go to the registry (if you have one). We ended up with both money & gifts off our registry (a few gifts not on our registry, but they were thoughful). The money was from family and the gifts from friends. I guess what I am saying is, when there isn't a guideline people got flustered and get what they think you would want. Some feel bad giving money too. I hope this helps.

We had our eparty this past August and we didn't register either. I think its fine. We did get some gifts, but mainly people gave money which we put into a 'wedding account'. People can buy off the registry for the bridal shower.

we did not register. nobody asked if we did. every guest gave us a monetary gift.
i dont think its a big deal if you dont register - especially if you want to save that for your shower/when its closer to the wedding

I'm going to register but not include the card in the invite. If people really want to buy a gift, they can ask my parents or FH's parents where we're registered.
I dont think its giving the wrong impression - you DO want money, don't you? I dont think it makes the party seem like just an occasion to get money though.

I dont think you have to register...its pretty far away. If anything make a small registry and write something to those looking at it, like on lnt you can write something to your guests... and we wrote 'Since the weddings far away, we are going to be updating it as we figure ou t what we need'

I didnt register. my party was in july and in sept (I had two one for friends one for family). People asked but my wedding is two years away and its too far down the line to think about registering and what not. its up to you and what you think. I still got china tho! my aunt guess on what i would like, she was right!
08 crashing here. We had a big e party with about 140 guests. We did NOT register for the e-party and it was the best thing we did. First we got money from every guest except 2. Second, someone told me not to register that far in advance because if u get stuff for a gift such as a mixer or anything electric really, if u dont open it for a year and when u do open it, if it doesnt work it is hard to return and the product warranty usually has expired. It doesnt look bad at all.

We did the exact same thing. I only got 4 gifts out of 65 people that came....so our wedding account got a lot healthier!

Good! I am so glad to hear that many of you agree with us not wanting to register. My FH and I are hosting the eparty and it is costing us a significant amount of money but I really wanted it this way so I'm not complaining but the thought behind this was that we were trying to replenish what we send to put back towards our wedding. We are not even looking to break even here.
Thanks for the help girls!

Re: Engagement Party - Advice Needed
I had my engagement party a year and a half before the big day and I was so agianst registering . I din't know what we were going to want in another year. I also didn't want to register bc I didn't want ppl to feel obligated to get me a present with getting them already with the shower and the wedding. In the end my mom won the war after begging me to register but I only registered for small things that we needed for the apt now. We didn't get that much from registry tho more money than anything.

fh and i registered for a few things, just in case people didnt want to give money and give a gift. those who wanted to give a gift callled and asked if and where we were registered, we didnt put in on the invite. but we wound up gettting a ton of $$$ so dont worry! you can always register for a few basics...?

We did register for ours just to give people the option...but we left off things purposely. So maybe just put a handful of things on that you could use now that way your guests have an option.

it's not standard practice to register, so i wouldn't worry about it. we did bc people kept asking us to, and we got about half and half (gifts & money). you'll get more $ if you DON'T register, but you'll prob get a few crappy gifts in there too--no biggie.
