Do you think having an engagement party and a wedding shower plus a gift at the wedding.... isn't this a bit much?
what do you think

I don't think so. A lot of people don't bring gifts to an engagement party. My family threw one for us and it was just an extra reason to get both families to celebrate- the gifts are insignificant.

I think if it's spread out a bit it's fine.
One of my friends had a very long engagement and wanted to celebrate right away with an e-party. The wedding was nearly 2 years later.
Another friend had an e-party in Feb, shower in August, bachelorette party in Sept, wedding in Oct, and a christmas/housewarming party in Dec. I felt beat up.

I don't think it is too much - BUT I think it depends on the spirit and the size of the parties.
We had an e-party partly because our family kept calling my parents and asking when they were going to have one - it was small about 35-40 people a luncheon - close family, bridal party and like 5 friends
My shower I am told they invited (I have nothing really to do with the guest list) about 38 people and there will be about 25-28 there. So we kept it small.
I think a lot of it has to do with the spirit -I have been to parties where the goal was to celebrate the engagement and others where they were clearly hunting for money (THEY ACTUALLY TOLD PEOPLE THIS - we want money to pay for the wedding so it is a fundraiser)

I think it's fine as long as you give people time to recouperate in between events. I think it's a gift hunt if they are barely spaced out. We had an e-party soon after we got engaged (October), I guess my shower will be some time over the summer, and the the wedding will be in October. For me, I just like to get together with the people I care about, it's not really about the gifts. We still haven't even registered yet!

I agree with ChristineC68 'I think if it's spread out a bit it's fine.'
I had both. My engagement party was in Feb. 03 and my shower was Jan. 04

I agree. We will be engaged for three years when we get married, so we had an e-party one year after we got engaged.

Re: Engagement party and a shower
We kinda feel it can get to be a bit much, JMHO. We did have dinner with our parents and siblings so that everyone could meet but otherwise no engagement party. I think engagement parties are nice but it depends on how elaborate they are. We've been to engagement parties that were more elaborate than weddings. I think I also got turned off by one engagement party in particular that we went to - it was very elaborate & in the end the couple split up and never had a wedding!
