Engagement Party/ Coed Shower

I need some advice, girls. I have decided that I don't want a bridal shower. Half of my BP lives out of state, and there's just not that many fun women in our families, so no shower.

However, I do want to have an engagement party, including close friends, the BP, and FI and my immediate family. But my mom thinks an engagement party is 'tacky'. I am trying to explain to her that it isn't, and that lots of people have it, but she's stubborn.

I'm toying with another idea... A good friend of mine is Brazilian. And when she got married, we had a 'bar shower'. It was for both guys and girls - and you bought presents respectively. Girls bought kitchen/house stuff and guys bought toos/bar stuff. The couple sat in front of everyone and shook the present... If they figured out what was in the box, everyone in the party had to do a shot. If they shook the present and guessed wrong, the couple did a shot. Needless to say bride and groom to be were a little tipsy by the end of the evening.

It was such a fun time! I don't think the drinking would be appropriate for my crowd, nor opening presents in front of everyone... But is there any difference between a coed shower and engagement party?

Sorry this is so long, I just don't know what to put on the invitation, and my mother is driving me crazy!!!!!

I think the co-ed shower is called a 'Jack and Jill' party

people have them- I have never been to one- google it!

I'm with Hollie, the shots sound great! As for Jack and Jill showers.. I would love to have one, but I am not too sure FH's friends would like to be there! FH would rather HIM have a bridal shower, lol.. he loves presents!

Nowadays, you can do whatever type of party/shower you want. Go with your gut and have the party you want, no matter what mom says.

I want to do the same exact thing! I'm not really into the whole shower thing and my bridesmaids are out of state as well.
