Me and my FH were engaged April 17 this year and have set a tentative date of Sept. 27 '08 and I was wondering what a good date for the engagement party is. We were thinking the end of august this year, or early september, but with our wedding so far away...is it too early? We haven't even registered yet (we don't even LIVE together yet so even if we WERE registered we don't have anywhere to keep it LOL). What are you guys doing? Do tell!

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
We got engaged April 1, 2006 and our wedding is July 3, 2008. We are having an engagement party on July 15 this year. It is up to you. I don't think there are any rules. Hopefully people will bring cash to help pay for the wedding!!

No, I think as close to the engagement as possible. Basically while the engagement is still fresh ya know?

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
I was wondering the same thing. Usually e-parties take place a yr or less b4 the date.. or so i've heard. I got engaged on Christmas Eve in 2005 and have our date set for April 25, 2008. But we are having our engagement party the end of july... I'm not paying mind to the etiquette... i want to get it out there and done.

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
I agree...while it is still fresh and everyone is excited. I think if the e-party is too close to the wedding, people might think, why bother? ya know?

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
exactly.. because then you have the e-party 1 year before the wedding, the bridal shower, 3-4 months before the wedding, then the wedding... that is a lot for people to give!

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
Thanks guys! This was also posted on the BHB board so based on all your guys' advice we'll stick with the August date. Even if it's a little early, I think it's good to space out the parties where ppl have to give us presents!

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
I don't mean to butt in, but we got engaged on April 29th of this year and the e-party was this past saturday, (June 17th). I think the end of August would have been better, a little more time to plan, to let everyone know and also to register. I think your making the right choice with August, and don't worry that it's a while before your wedding day, you still have the holidays and it goes by so quickly.

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
sorry to crash this board - but i think if you had the e-party this august it would be perfect timing!
i got engaged december 2004 - wedding planned for november 2006 - and had my e-party in april 2005.
trust me - do your e-party as close to the engagement as possible - because before you know it your wedding will almost be here and you will not have the time to focus on the e-party and you will just want to be married already!!
celebrate your engagement while its fresh - its a great time in your life!!
good luck and best wishes!

we got engaged june 26th and had the engagement party september 17th ...it was wonderful...no one compalined about the timing either...i think the closer to the wedding people would complain due to money situations

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
We got engaged on 03/05/06. Our engagement party is on 07/16/06. We aren't registering for our E-party-just for the bridal shower. Most people just wanted to give us money. My mom, aunts, grandmother, FSIL, and FMIL wanted to get us special gifts but besides them, I don't think anyone else will give us gifts-just $.

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
Yeah, officially we aren't 'expecting' presents, but really, what should you expect? Are people usually going to give money or presents? We aren't registered for anything and we aren't going to drop hints or anything because we really just want to get everyone together to celebrate. Any advice would be really helpful - FH and I are the first ones in our family to get married in the past 20 years!

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
Lauren, I am in the same boat. We got engaged 6/1 and having out party 10/8. My mother wants us to register because she is afraid of the gifts we will get (as my father said, 14 blenders, 20 picture frames ) But we have no where to put anything and we do not live together either. I think we are going to register for little things. What that is, I'm not sure but when I do, I will let you know. Good luck!

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
I got engaged 2/15/06 and had an engagement party about two months later. Registering for presents didn't even occur to me at the time. We got a lot of cutsie things like picture frames and albums and vases. Other than that, everyone gave us money which was a HUGE help. We were able to pay our deposit at our reception hall with the money we made with some left over for our first payment.

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
thank god you posted this. I mean I only have a date to the wedding but it isn't the 'set in stone' date for the wedding. I got engaged May 31st and was thinking of having the engagement party in November/2006. I want to celebrate the engagement because I will not be getting married before 2008.
Etiquette about something like this is not my concern. I think you should do what you want. If you want to have an engagement party like tomorrow, do it! It is your day to celebrate something exciting...so you choose what is best for both you and your future husband!!!
Ahh 2 posts ...im so new at this.

Re: Engagement Party Etiquette
Although my e-party was way after my engagement because we were mourning a death in the family.... i agree that as close to the engagement as possible is a good idea.
Almost everyone gave money for my e-party. I didn't register because I wanted to save that for the shower.
