Is there a general rule or ettiquette for engagement gift? Is it okay to not buy from the registry? Or should I be safe and just get something I know she wants?

Re: Engagement party gift - from registry or no?
It is always okay to not buy from a registry, especially if you are getting them something with a special meaning, or something you know they want. But the registry was created so the couple could put in specific things they need and want without having to tell people 'oh I want this...' So by buying from a registry, you know you are getting them something they need and want. If you decide to buy off the registry, just be sure to give them the gift reciept just incase it is something they already have.

At our e-party, 99% of the physical gifts we received were from our registry (lots of people gave $$ though)

For our e-party not one person gave us a gift, it was all money they gave us...Actually one person gave us a gift who we didn't invite, she works with FH's mom, she gave us something off our registry.

I am not telling people we are registered untill after the e-party. If anyone wants to bring a gift thats fine. but we figured if people dont know we are registered they will give us $$ gifts!

Just to let you girls know...that was my philosophy as well. We only told close friends where we were registered but EVERYONE ended up finding where we were registered and gave us gifts off it (you can find out online if people are registered). The people that didn't know we were registered got us random gifts that we probably won't end up using. People that want to give gifts will give a gift no matter what.

I would say don't buy off of the registry. I know when I registered in the beginning it was just to get some stuff on the registry and I didn't necessarily want all of the stuff I had put on, once I got the opportunity to look at what else was out there. My friend registered for stuff and I didn't get her things off her registry and told her that I had planned on it but didn't and she was glad that I hadn't b/c she said she did the same thing and just quickly put stuff up there but was changing her mind on some things now that they had chosen their china and dishes, etc...

same thing here -- the only people that knew we had registered where those close to us. and for our e-party I would say like more than 3/4 gave us $$, some gave gifts off the registry and the rest for just thoughtful or useful things. which we loved the things people picked out themselves.
any which way you go you'll be okay I think it's the thought that counts

The true etiquette for engagement parties is not to be registered yet because gifts aren't expected to be given. I think that rule is silly though because I certainly wouldn't show up without a gift, and don't know any one that would go to a party without some kind of a gift - so etiquette isn't always the answer. But you prob should buy for the registry if there is one - those are the things she needs.
