I want to have an engagement party. My mother is willing to plan one, and alot of my side of the family and friends will attend. I have been engaged for a year now, and am getting married in 16 mons. I have been told that having an engagement party and a shower and the wedding...its too many gifts that people are going to have to keep shelling out to me and my FH. Do a lot of people feel this way? I never thought that engagement parties were in poor taste!!! Has anyone else had one...do ppl bring gifts? PLEASE HELP!

Re: Engagement party HELP!!!
Do not put a 'registered at' card in the invitation, so no one will be obligated.

Re: Engagement party HELP!!!
Personally, out of all the people invited to my e-party, 1 person didn't come. It was one of my moms friends thats known me as a kid. That was exactly her point-of-view.
Personally, an engagement party is a great way for the couple to start saving. You can register early, or you can not register, and just accept envelopes instead!

Re: Engagement party HELP!!!
I don't this its poor taste, its just a matter of preference.
I didn't have one because I didn't want people to feel obligated to bring gifts... I did however want one but I knew if I did, people would bring gifts, so I decided not to.
I personally think its over the top for an engagement party, shower, bachlorette party, and then the wedding. It adds up for people.
I however on the other hand have been to MANY engagement parties...
I guess its whatever you like goes! If you want one, then have one!
Good luck on whatever you decide!

Re: Engagement party HELP!!!
I would just tell people that you want both of your families to meet since your wedding is 16 months away. Thats why we are having our eparty.

Re: Engagement party HELP!!!
My parents just gave us one over the weekend. It was a great way for both families to meet and we have not registered so there was card with the invitation. While people didn't feel obligated to brings gifts we did receive a few envelopes and a few things for the kitchen. We had a great time! I think that especially in your case with the wedding 16 months away that it is enough time between the e party and bridal shower, etc. The only thing I was skeptical about was having ours so close to the wedding date since a little over 8 months away. Go for it!
