Okay, so I am thinking of having my engagement party in November. Although it is a lil bit away, people are all thinking they are invited, in my head I am thinking they aren't. Not that I wouldnt want them there but I have a big family and I want them all there so I would have to cut back on friends. All my close friends would, of course, be invited. But how do you not hurt anyone's feelings. I know a lot of people expect to be invited. They will be invited to the wedding, maybe, but the engagement party i dont want to go crazy with.
How do you do this without creating tension between certain people/friends?!

Re: Engagement party issues...
For our engagement party (which is next weekend ) we just made it clear that we were only inviting family. A few people from work that we see outside work were also invited. We wanted to just have something intimate since the families are a good size. No one at work seemed to have an issue with this. At least that that I heard of.

Just flat out tell them: I'd love to invite you, but I just can't. I have a big family, and they have to take first priority, so I'm limited in the number of friends I can invite.
If they will be invited to the wedding, then add something like 'Even though I can't invite you to the engagement party, I'm looking forward to having you at the wedding.'
If they can't understand that, then they're really not very good friends, honestly.

i would definitely tell them its family only...most people know engagement parties are for close family and friends....they wont be offended...i dont think!!!!! we didnt have one and do not plan on having one because our lives are so busy and i am planning the wedding..by the time we can have one ...it would be in Oct/Nov of this year and then we would be getting married 7 months later....i decided not to have an e-party

Re: Engagement party issues...
i dont think that it will be a problem at all - e parties are usually much more intimate then weddings - so inviting just family and close friends is normal
when i had that dinner for my engagement we invited our immediate families and aunts and uncles - my cousins came bc i only have 3 here but anthony's first cousin's weren't even invited because he has over 20!
the only friend i invited was jenn - but since we had to move it for the snow - she was in boston with you guys!!! lol
Trust me - you will see that TONS of people assume a lot of things - that they are in your bridal party - or that they are invited to your wedding
just make it VERY clear from the beginning that your intentions are and i think that it will be perfectly fine!!

Re: Engagement party issues...
I agree with all the girls. About 2 yrs ago I had a friend get married, and my family is extremely close with them, and we were all invited. However not everyone from our group of friends was invited, and they understood. She just said I would love to have you, but we have to invite family first, and then go from there because the hall they chose could only fit a certain number of people. No one was upset, and there were no grudges held!!!

Re: Engagement party issues...
I invited my family at 4pm to the engagement party and my friends to come and have a drink with us at 7:30.
It was a way of having both groups there but making it intimate for family and have our friends be comfortable.
We also invited friends for drinks not dinner so we could save money.

We're having our E-party on 07/16-we have 220 guests for the wedding and fifty people for the E-party. We kept it close family and friends. No one has said anything and some people gave us gifts without even knowing about the party.
