Engagement Party Problems.....

Engagement Party Problems.....

Ok ladies...help help help...
So my FH and I had agreed when we had gotten engaged that we didn't really want an engagement party because we don't really believe in 'asking for gifts.' Our original plan was parents, siblings and Godparents only. Here comes the wrench...

Had a blow out fight w/ mom yesterday because she wants her brothers there + their kids + THEIR kids so her alternative was having a gathering at the house w/ my FH's immediate family and my extended family and if my FFIL wants to do the same with his family in his house he can do that.

I objected to this because I feel that this is supposed to be a time where two families are coming together, not having separate engagement parties. Having it at a restaurant is out of the question because it's 67 people and would be too much $$$.

And this is why I want to elope, let the fun begin.

I definitely agree about having seperate parties... my mom kept asking me about an engagement party... i said no that I just wanted to parents, bros and sisters and neices and nephews... and thats what we did..

I didnt budge at all on that... i actually almost cancelled it because FH's aunt was in her last days...

anyway... tell them both that if they want to throw you an engagement party they can both chip into a place and have everyone!

True, I'm sure they would have no problem chipping in for a place, people at work keep saying to do a vfw but I don't want that because that means we need some kind of entertainment and then it becomes the party we NEVER wanted.

Not to mention 1/2 of the 67 people are kids btwn the ages of 14-2, which I really didn't want kids running a muck. I really wanted a nice quiet sit down dinner.

Does anyone have a house that can accommodate everyone?

No, which is why my mom wants to do separate eng parties, one for my extended and his immediate and one for his extended and my immediate. Obviously just the one w/ my family at her house and then whatever my FFIL wants to do for his family.

originally we were just going to have parents, siblings, and god parents. then we added aunts/uncles/cousins.. then we added friends and family friends..
so what was supposed to be a nice dinner, turned into a party with dj, favors, open bar, dinner, CPs, etc.

Honestly, shop around, the party turned out great, everyone got along well and had a great time.
In total we paid about $1,800-$2000 for the E-party and ended up making double that PLUS asst. gifts.

We really didn't care about the money/gifts... it was just a nice outcome.
