I have a random etiquette question for the Engagement party. Would it be ok if FH and I hosted or threw the engagement party? My family is all in Florida, so they wont be able to host it. Also, at an engagement party, would the bride and groom pay for everyones food if its at a restaurant, or does everyone pay for themselves?
We are thinking of having one at the restaurant where we went on our first date, and I wanted to make sure we weren't going completely outside of protocol, because we cant afford to cover everyone. Otherwise, it will be at FHs house.
Thanks in advance for any and all advice

IMO: I think you have a great idea on your mind to have an engagement party at the place where you and your FH met, but If you are not planning on paying for them, you are going to have to write that in the invitation. Usually with an engagement party it is assumed that it is either being thrown, or you are going to pay for your guests.

Re: Engagement Party Q
so if we cant afford to cover anyone (we just filled out an app for an apartment, which is tapping all of our money), should we have an informal get together at FHs house for drinks and hanging out? We would like to do the restaurant, but we cant cover the 14+ people

Honestly you should not host it, even if you pay for it, then on the invitation put someone else as hosting it, such as your parents or someone...the reason why and the same goes for bridal showers is because it is an event that guests typically give a gift and when you host it yourself then its like you are asking for gifts...thats why they say never host an even such as this.
Also yes even if it is at a restaurant then the guests do not pay for themselves, they would expect it to be paid for. If you want to do this then what i suggest is tell your MOH or someone to call people up and say hey lets throw a dinner party for them and take them out, let someone else handle this and make it in a way that they take you out, not that youre having an engagement party and people pay for themselves.
Otherwise yes then just have it at the house.

Re: Engagement Party Q
We are hosting ours pretty much along with my parents. We didnt put response cards we just put to rsvp by email or phone and we put our numbers and my moms and my email. So i dont see anything wrong with it.
Also if i was invited to a party i wouldnt expect to pay. Id say have it at your place and cook the food yourself! might be a little cheaper!
