So my engagement party is this weekend and my FMIL asked me if I wanted to tell her a certain number of seats to put at each of my families tables. Right now we have tables with 8 at each table.
She is not planning on making place cards or anything, but she thought maybe families would see the right number of seats and sit at that table...
I'm not sure if there is really a point to this. If I try and separate the tables by families and there are no place cards, I'm sure people are going to sit anywhere anyway.
She also told us to sit wherever we want so basically we have to choose who to sit with.
That is going to be a little awkward, no?
Any idea what I should do here? TIA!

Re: Engagement Party Question
If someone had asked me that question, I would have thought it was to make sure that people didn't get split up who wanted to sit together.
In other words, if you have two uncles with wives and kids and they equal 10 people and they all wanted to sit at a table, should she put 10 seats? Or is 8 ok becasue you're going to have more couples and it would be more comfortable with fewer people at the table? That's what I would have been thinking...?

Re: Engagement Party Question
Haha, yea I'm not really sure. Thing is my Mom's side is all adults with younger kids and they are like 20 people so it doesn't really break out nicely like that. My Dad's family can all fit at a table of eight.
I'm not really sure if there is even a point to moving things around because my Mom's family is not going to fit at one table no matter what.

Re: Engagement Party Question
This is a great idea and makes the most sense IMO.
I don't know if it's really going to go over though. It sounds like she pretty much knows how her family is sitting because her side will fit at one table and so will my FFIL's side.
This kind of leaves us in an awkward position though. Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I'll text her and see what she says about it!

Re: Engagement Party Question
I just texted her. She said, 'wouldn't your mom be more comfortable sitting with her family?'
Which I take as I'd like to sit with my family, but I'm trying to be nice.
I told her my concerns. She said to talk to my FH and she will talk to her husband and we will figure something out.
I'll have to see what FH wants to do. I don't think it is right/fair of us to sit with one family over the other.
Oh well, we'll see.

Re: Engagement Party Question
i think it would be nice to sit with all parents, yours and FILs. IMO dont worry about it too much, you probably wont be sitting too much anyway, if anything maybe just to eat!

I think that's a pretty fanastic idea, actually, duh, I didn't even think of that suggestion.
