Engagement Party Suggestions

I just got engaged about a month ago. I am the first in my family to get married and out of my close friends. I want to have an engagement party. What is better? -an engagement party in June in my backyard or at a hall in the winter (January). Because of my family and our schedule these are basically the only times we can do it. And if I have it in June in my backyard...do you think that is too late for an engagement party (we are most likely getting married in Aug 2011 and it would be ten months after we got engaged).... sorry for the long post but I have no clue about these things....

Re: Engagement Party Suggestions

I'm not of much help in this department. I've actually been considering having an engagement party too since I'm the first out of my friends and the first formal wedding in both FH and my families in a long time. The only thing is we've been engaged since Feb 2008 and just started planning the wedding. Is it too late?

So I guess I could use some advice too.

Re: Engagement Party Suggestions

I am getting married 9-1-11 and we recently had our enagagement party on the fourth of July. It was SO beautiful and everyone had a blast. I came up with an orange and yellow theme even though it was on the fourth of July. We had a barbeque and had so much food. My Mom did most of the cooking. Food ranged from hamburgers to sushi. My fiancee is Haitian and Venezuelan and his family brought a lot of ethinic food. My family is southern so it was a wide arrangement of food. The barbeque was the best idea, especially cause it was during the summer. Everyone enjoyed the outdoors and relaxation. At night time we had candles everywhere and it looked BEAUTIFUL. This past April fiancee and I drive to get fireworks and that was the highlight for the evening.(I know its illegal. LOL)

Though I noticed that you will be getting married next summer, why not try early spring engagement party? You have plenty of time to plan a nice party. I think that would be nice. To spend the money to rent a hall or venue is kind of crazy with all the expenses from the wedding. (Though if you can swing the expense of the hall/venue, go for it!) Hope this helps.....

Re: Engagement Party Suggestions

I don't think it's too late for an engagement party. As long as it's not in the same year as the wedding. You don't want people thinking you're just doing it for extra gifts. Or you don't want people mad because it's another expense close to the wedding. If you do it now or within the next 6 months I think that would be fine.

I did a backyard e-party with a tent (see my pictures) and it was set up really nice. My parents paid for it, it's def a lot cheaper than renting another hall and making it another big formal occasion.

Re: Engagement Party Suggestions

i think either would be great. my bro and sil had it in my parents backyard with tents, a glass bar, dj and it was awesome!! i had mine at a hall and i also loved it. i think it depends on what ur looking for. my parents invited people back to their house after to keep the party going, so thats always an option if u dont want the party to go so fast!

june is not too late! i was engaged in april 08 and had my e party in march 09... it was a nice way to break up the time in between the engagement & wedding! and to introduce our families of course

I really like the idea of having it in a backyard - it's more personal that way and more casual. And I agree with previous post... it's a gerat way for the two families to meet.

My FSIL threw us a surprise engagement party / my 26th birthday party at a bar which I loved because it got all our friends together and we just drank the night away.

I would like sometime next summer to get our two families together for a BBQ or something to get them to know one another so the wedding isn't the first time they will meet. Probably just close family members and the WP.
