Engagement Pary Dilemma

I am new to this board. I got engaged in August and DF parent's had said that they would make us an engagement party. We are getting married next October 2003 and they want to make our engagment party in March 2003. I feel that this is a bit crazy. It is a long time after we are engaged and close to the wedding. Can I say no?

Re: Engagement Pary Dilemma

I got engaged 4/4/02 having the e-party around 3/03 and getting married 3/04. I don't know what proper etiquette states but our dad's were hospitalized months apart from each other and my dad is still recovering. So we decided on doing it much later after our engagement date.
For us its more for our families to meet.

Re: Engagement Pary Dilemma

I think this is a little too close. It is usually a year before your wedding date. However, if they really want to throw it for you, I would suggest a very intimate dinner for close family & friends. Try to keep it small.

Re: Engagement Pary Dilemma

I think it's a little too close to the wedding for an E-party. IMO, they should be closer to when you get engaged, especially when you are not having a really long engagement. (special circumstances apply of course)

A small family gathering so the families can meet would be lovely.

Re: Engagement Pary Dilemma

I had to wait for my e-party until March (Nov. wedding) because FH's family is from MA and they were all worried about snow and trying to drive down to NY. But if everyone was local I would have done it much sooner.
Why not have a bridal party and immediate family get together instead of a formal e-party. I kept my list to BP members (their spouses/dates), immediate family, grandfather and a few of my Aunts/Uncles. I didn't invite co-workers, nonBP friends, extended family or family friends. It was a nice way for people to met and get to know each other. We had a buffet dinner and dessert table. I used potted tulips as centerpieces and gave choc. pops and bookmarks as favors.

Re: Engagement Pary Dilemma

Thanks Everyone. It will probably be really small, like you guys suggested. I would rather have it sooner or not at all, but they are pretty set on March.
