Engagement presents?

Engagement presents?

Don't know if any of you girls got suckered into this... before FH and I were engaged, I told him I would put $2000 in for a new tv once we were engaged as an 'engagement ring' for him. Anyone else do something crazy like this? At the time, I thought, oh whatever, it's a fraction of what he'll spend... now I have this monstrosity in my living room! Anyone else say/do anything crazy before getting engaged?

Here is FH's 'ring'

Re: Engagement presents?

I bought FH a PS3 for his 'engagement gift' and since we had just moved in together and he was starting his first full-time job after grad school, we splurged on a few things.

we now have a 46' samsung LCD 1080p tv... surround sound speakers, a nice stand, a wii....

I admit it is nice having the tv, especially since we got a DVR as an e-gift

I wanted to buy FH an ipod as an engagement gift and he said absolutely not. But he wants to put a plasma tv on our registry. He doesn't get it when I say 'no one is gonna spend that much money on us.'

1. Most places have a completion bonus where if an item on your registry doesn't sell, you can buy it yourself 10% off after the wedding.

2. There's a website called honeyfund.com that lets you create a honeymoon registry. I watched the tutorial and it seems that they dont actually get involved with your money, and people click 'I'm buying X,' X gets marked purchased, and then they get a little thing to print out that says 'I bought you X' which they include in their card with a check. I think there are also ways to pay by credit card/Paypal but they involve the Paypal fee. You then type in whatever you want and what it will cost for your honeymoon, broken down however you want. 'dinner for 2 .... $150' 'bottle of champagne for the first night.... $75' '100 miles of airfare to Aruba... $120' etc. you can break it down however you want.

I don't see why you can't do that with non-honeymoon things. It's a little goofy but for high-ticket items you really want, who is stopping you from doing '$100 toward the tv of our dreams' and list 20 of those. People can pick how many $100s they want to give you.

Probably tacky, but it would enable you to 'register' for high-ticket items in a way that would allow guests to contribute.
