engagement ring HELP! (repost from 2010)

Hey girls. I have lurked on this board for awhile. Anyway, my boyfriend and I have been talking about getting married for awhile now, and I figure the wedding will be in 2010 so I thought I'd post here.

I need help with the engagement ring. I am not a jewelry person at all. I actually didn't even think i wanted a diamond until we went looking last night for rings. I don't like the diamond industry, and was looking for an aquamarine but it seems impossible to find anything without diamonds on the side, so I might just give in and get a diamond.

hahah I told him he can get me a cc, but he refuses hahah.

Anyway, since I don't know much about diamonds or what I want I figured you all could give me some help. One if anyone knows where I could find a nice ring without diamonds that would be awesome.

Two, I know I want princess cut. I thought I liked solitary, but after looking yesterday, I think I like little stones on the side. I liked like one little stone on each side and then diamonds in the actual band. (don't know what it's called...channel?)

That link actually didn't work for me, but what I have in style seems similar to what I have. I can try to take photos but they never come out very well now that I sold my good camera for a pocket one. I have a princess cut ring (purchased as a set) we had it custom made (the setting, anyway) we picked the stone and it has more than two stones on the side but I'll post it to give you an idea.

That ring is very pretty and I think if you like it that is what you should get. The stats on the ring are good too!!

If you don't want a diamond then why not just get a solitary gem that you want? You can have a jeweler make that for you. Also, check out the stores in the mall like Zales, Ultra Diamons and Kay. They may have something you are looking for. Also, Jared Jewelers has a lot. I think there is a store in Smithtown.

BTW...my ring looks like the one you posted in the pic except its just a princess cut solitare without any diamonds on the side. My wedding band has princess cut diamonds on it....so I wanted a plain band for the engagement ring.

Thank you for the store suggestions. I think we have to just look around more so I can see what I like. Do you have a picture of your ring? I thought I liked solitare princess, but the ones I saw yesterday, the bands were too thick. If I can find something with a thinner band I would definitely consider that.

I had the same problem too! I wanted a thin band and I wanted the stone to be set closer to my finger then really high on top of the band.

I will try to take some pics with my phone. They may be grainy but you will see the band and the setting.

THis is my ring, very simalar...except my side stones are round...
i originally wanted the side stones to be princess also, but i got this and i love it all just the same!!!

Also, go to a high end jewelry store. FH went to Michael C Fina and sat for an hour with a sales person to learn about diamonds. The more you learn, the better educated you become, and the more confident you'll get in picking out your own e-ring. It's a really fun process so have fun with it!

I don´t like diamonds either and was thinking about aquamarine as well as some other gemstones. Here is a link to a princess cut aquamarine with no diamonds:

You can search the site for other ideas. I also googled gemstone rings and found tons of stuff. If you know you definitely want aquamarine, google that. you don´t necesarily have to type engagment ring because that will pop up a lot of links for diamonds as well.
