we had an engagement party in January b/c our engagement is 2 years long... my parents threw it for us as a christmas present !!

it depends on the couple and their families !!

We decided against the party because it would be too much.

I know a lot of people found out we were engaged, no one sent us a gift, after we had sent out announcements. Very few people sent us small gifts. I mean it doesn't matter to me, but it would have been the thought that counts, considering my FIL and parents have gone overboard for their engagement and wedding gifts.

I had my eparty exactly one year to date of the wedding. Nobody thought it was strange or 'too much'. E-parties are expected in my family. If you don't have one, it's weird.

RELAX AND ENJOY YOUR EPARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Each family & person is different.
For us....our families don't really do that sort of stuff.
My FH refused to have one because didn't want people to think they had to bring a gift. I had family do it on there own........but very few.
It's asking alot IMO EP, then shower then wedding & then maybe a shower.

My wedding will be exactlly a year after the engagment party... Is it to much?

No and who cares. I've been to a lot of eparties recently and it's perfectly normal. Our eparty was October 6, 2007 and our wedding date is October 12, 2008.

I don't plan on having kids for a few years so my family won't need to worry about having to spend money on a baby shower gift. Besides, you don't have an eparty to get gifts, yes they are nice, but it's to celebrate the engagement.

i think your wedding is far enough away so it's ok. it's over a year!

Re: engagment party?

We are having an engagement party in a few weeks. My parents are throwing it for us. I am sure some of my friends think it's ridiculous...as none of them had one...but I really just wanted a celebration. I am not expecting gifts from my friends. I think they are pretty common now...especially if you have a lengthy engagement. And like everyone said...it's a great place for the families to meet prior to the wedding.

I am laughing b/c I feel the same way. I dont plan on having kids (FH has two that live with us...and that's more than enough for me)...so I figure it all evens out in the end. My friends wont have to buy me a baby shower gift and then attend the zillion events that follow when you have kids!
