Re: engagment party?
I think it might depend on what they are used to. My FH thought it was strange to have an e-party b/c his family doesn't do that kind of stuff...but my family always has (so you know who won ) Don't listen to anyone. If they are making such a stink about it...let them stay home. You don't need people like that at your party. I had such a great time at my eparty. All of my favorite people were in the same place at once. Don't regret your decision!
I am not one to tell you its too much....I am not one of 'those'..LOL
Its up to you...you're the bride! Do you want one? IF the answer is yes..then have one! Plus..if someone else is going to pay for it then why the hell not!

Re: engagment party?
I think you should definitely have one if you want one! It's up to you! I think most people are excited to be invited to any party and it gives them something social and fun to do. Besides, good friends and family might still have bought you an e-gift anyway so at least now with a e-party, they're getting something in return!!

Re: engagment party?
We had one about a month after we got engaged (and 10 months before the wedding). We rented a private room in a nice restaurant and treated everyone to dinner and wine.
We didn't expect gifts at all, however some people did bring gifts such as wine and picture frames.
Some people write 'no gifts please' on invitations.
There's nothing wrong with having a party! Who cares what those people think?!

Re: engagment party?
in my opinion (because you asked) I feel e-parties for shorter engagements (yr or less) for a couple that were 'expected' to be married and both families have met before and mingled... it is too much because people will bring gifts regardless of what you say because it is a celebration and it is rude not to, we just enjoyed talking to people in smaller groups as we saw them and expressed the feeling that we already know how much everyone supports our relationship. A lovely , intimate, sit down dinner like someone brought up sounds very nice too.

I don't think it's too much. If you want to have one, go for it! It's a very exciting time in your lives and you should enjoy your engagement. Anyone who doesn't want to celebrate with you doesn't have to come. Their loss.

Re: engagment party?
I just had an engagment party last weeked.. thats about a year away from my wedding. Our mothers wanted to throw one for us. It was alot of fun and we did get alot of gifts/ money. People didnt have to and we didnt expect it but they did. I do feel a little guilty considering I will be having a shower and a wedding all in the year, but it was still fun to celebrate... and you should celebrate.. Its an exciting time!

Re: engagment party?
i think its all about personal preferance/circumstances.
i PERSONALLY dont mind e-parties as long as they dont go overboard. i had a friend who threw a huge e-party (professional photographers, long gown, etc. etc.) ...it was like a preview for the wedding (too bad the engagement fell through). that (for me) seemed too much. another girl had a large dinner at a nice restaurant with close friends/family. that was nice :)

Re: engagment party?
I agree with most posts here. You're the Bride, it's your wedding - so do what YOU want.
I personally opted out of having an E-party, but that was mainly because we aren't having that long of an engagement anyway. We were engaged this past July and the wedding is in December. That's like 5 months. Way over-kill to have ANOTHER party thrown into the mix. But personally, i don't think i would have had one anyway (even if we WERE gonna have a year+ engagement) because I know how difficult it is for people who attend weddings already. You not only gotta buy the couple a wedding gift, but there's also the shower gift, and the dress you'll wear that day, blah, blah, blah. I get really stressed when i'm preparing for somebody elses wedding. It's a LOT of money. So for me, I just didn't wanna add on the stress for anyone either. i don't need a whole other set of gifts and attention. I'm already gonna have the Wedding and Bridal Shower. That's enough for me. JMO. But i DEFINITELY don't think anybody's wrong for having one!!! Of course not. Definitely go for the E-Party if that's what you want.

Re: engagment party?
i think you should totally have one if you want!! we had a small one (family and wedding party) so that everyone could meet each other before the wedding. we got engaged in march, our e-party was in june, and we're getting married in january.

Re: engagment party?
I never really heard of people having engagement parties except for more of the socialites. But that is because of where I grew up. No one ever had them. But then I moved here and heard that it is def more common. Do what you want and dont worry about it!

Re: engagment party?
I think you should do whatever you want to! Its your special time. I've been to countless E-parties and I never once thought it was ridiculous for the couple to have one.
But.... this is coming from me who had a huge E-party with flowers, favors, table runners, professional photographer and all that. So to some it might have been a mini wedding.... but I don't care. For me.... this is what I do for work (event planning), so FH and I wanted to have an amazing party. I tried to make it very clear for people to look at it as a fabulous night out.... cocktails, dinner and dancing (exact wording from my invites) instead of just another party. Personally I like getting dressed, up having some fabby cocktails and dancing with my friends. Everyone at my party had a great time. We did not have an E-party expecting gifts. We did get some...... but in no way did we have this party to get gifts.
Bottom line..... We're sooo happy and we wanted to celebrate with our Family and Friends.
Do whatever you want!

Re: engagment party?
i want our families to meet so i think an eparty is a nice opportunity to do so... i got engaged in april but my eparty is not until march, since my wedding is in june 2010. i think it breaks it up a little! I am having a luncheon, nothing too dramatic. if you want an epary then by all means have one!
