Engravable silver platter

I really, really, really like the idea of having my guests engrave their names on a platter (in lieu of a guest book). Has anyone seen this done?

I've used a pen engraving tool in the past-never had a problem. I'm wondering if guests will feel the same.

What do you think??

Re: Engravable silver platter

I think its a really nice idea.

Ive never used an engraving tool so I can't say much about what your guests will think.

However - aren't real silver platters really expensive? I would be a little afraid to have someone ruin it by accident or some kid mess it up. But if you dont think thats likely - its a lovely keepsake.

Re: Engravable silver platter

I went to a wedding where this was done and it makes a lovely keepsake. The engraving pen was easy to use, but a little loud. I would just say make sure to keep the platter somewhat separated from where your guests will be seated.

I am planning to use the idea as well because I love the finished product!

Re: Engravable silver platter

please more info on this! I was thinking of getting a ceramic platter at one of those places where you can make and paint your own pottery. I would have everyone sign it and then the pottery place glazes it and fires it for you which makes it a lovely permanent keepsake. I might light the silver better though...

Re: Engravable silver platter

Hi everyone, years ago my dad and I used an engraving pen to mark the neighborhood kids' bicycles and to mark his tools (there had been a rash of garage burglaries). I believe he got the pen from a hardware store; I don't think it was expensive. You'd probably have to ask to be sure that the pen can engrave the surface you have in mind.

JPSgirl, my first idea was to have everyone sign a ceramic plate, too. I have a plate from my HS graduation, and look at it/use it all of the time. It really is nice to have a keepsake that you use.

I'm not sure about what kind of silver you'd need to use for best results. I registered for a silver plated bowl that is described as ideal for engraving.

These sound like questions for dad. I'll call him in a few hours and report back!
