Engraving Nightmare!! Long!!

Engraving Nightmare!! Long!!

my FSIL & FBIL gave us a Waterford Cake & Knife server when we got engaged. And she told us to give it back to them when we were ready to get it engraved and they would take care of it.....so we gave it back to them on Easter.

This is probably silly -- but FSIL never asked what we wanted engraved on our cake & knife server. And I've been so busy studying for all my exams I didn't write her till last Tuesday to tell her what to engrave. She writes back to tell me.....that she already dropped it off at Fortunoffs and that on the knife it will have our monogram 'n-V-s', and on the cake server our names 'Nicholas & Stephanie V---------, September 14, 2007'. I didn't think she'd go to Fortunoff's without asking us what we wanted!! Ugh!! I know this is silly but I didn't really want our monogram on them, and I'd rather they both said the same thing

We wanted them engraved the traditional way with bride's name then groom's name. I'm having my first real 'bride' moment.

She still hasn't aplogized for not asking us first, or waiting for me to tell her what we wanted on them. Wouldn't that agrevate you? This is driving me nuts and it's such a little thing. She just said don't worry no one will look at them. But I will!! They are Waterford servers that we really liked and want to display after the wedding in a china closet, so now I will always see the wording she chose. She went with the 'modern' way of engraving as she said, which is groom first then bride on the cake server, and a monogram on the knife again with groom first then bride. I just think the knife will look ridiculous with a tiny moogram on a huge knife. Ugh!!!

Anyway -- thanks for listening, just had to vent and share.

**ALSO, has anyone heard of re-doing the engraving? Where they buff out the wording that is already there and re-engrave the piece? Just wondering how it would look? Thanks again

So sorry that you didn't get what you wanted. I think you might be able to get them redone, depending on how dep the engraving is, but I would wait till after the wedding. I'm sure your FSIL didn't apologize because she feels she did nothing wrong. Just to play devil's advocate for a moment, and stop reading if you don't want to hear this, but she probably figured if you didn't tell her how to have it engraved when you gave it to her, then it didn't matter. She was just offering a nice gesture to get them engraved for you. I would take them say thank you, use them as is at the wedding and then look into re-doing them. I hope you can get them redone the way you want them.

I wouldn't risk ruining them by getting them re-engraved. I konw that it's not exactly what you wanted, but it was a gift. She was doing something nice for you guys by making sure that she got the engraving done. If it were me, I wouldn't have thought twice about taking them to the store because it's not something that I would have been picky about. Just think about what a small thing this is in the scheme of things.

Re: Engraving Nightmare!! Long!!

Your are right -- I am so apprecitive of the gift they gave us and that she offered to take care of getting the engraving done. One less thing for us to have to take care of.

But I forgot to mention that when we handed them to her on Easter I told her I would e-mail her what we wanted on them and she totally disregarded it. I did take a week to tell her -- but she also knew I had been studying for 2 comprehensive grad school exams and had been living at the library. That's what frustrates me - she could've e-mailed me too to just say 'I'm heading to Fortunoff's, what did you want engraved?' Right?

I know I made the mistake by waiting too long to tell her, but should could've asked.

Thanks for listening

If you mentioned to her that you were going to tell her, then she should have waited or sent you a note, like you mentioned.

I hope this doesn't seem like a stupid idea but what if you get the other side of the knife engraved the way you want it. That way you can display it the way you like it and then switch it around when SIL comes to visit. My mom and dad were given an engraved serving set when they got married. My moms friend had it engraved but she put the wrong name for my dad. My dads name is Alfred but my mom calls him Allen bc she said he told her that was his name the first time they met, but we all know the truth she hates his name I know this is differant from your situation but i thought it was a funny little story for you.

I don't blame you, it would bother me too. Granted, she was trying to be helpful and do something very nice for you but it is your cake set and at the end of the day it should be your decision what is engraved on them. I would call Fortunoff myself and see if it can be redone if not now than after the wedding.

truthfully, that wouldn't bother me.... It would only bother me if there were misspellings, or in my case, they used my first name and FH's last (I'm keeping my maiden name).

Let me find the silver lining in this for you...
This is the first object you will have with your new married identity on it..... isn't that in itself something to treasure?
