Entertainment at the wedding? long vent!

Entertainment at the wedding? long vent!

So, last night my future MIL said to my Fi that she is worried that our wedding will be boring! He (the smart boy that he is) replied that us getting married should be entertainment enough! Besides there is going to be dancing and the usual garter toss and of course The First Dance, and most importantly our friends and family together having fun, talking and dancing! FMIL said it’s best when someone does some funny poetry reading and/or plays a musical instrument at the reception, otherwise people will be bored, because, and I quote: 'nobody wants to dance the whole night'! ***! First off all, I want to dance the whole night!
Second of allI think it’s much more boring when someone’s 12 year old cousin starts playing violin in the middle of the reception while all people want to do is dance and talk to each other! I have been to enough wedding to know that! I swear sometimes that woman says the weirdest things! (I only learned about this conversation later, after he hung up the phone with her and I asked what was the problem) Just venting! Thanks for listening!
Just wanted to add: there is nothing wrong with someone performing at the wedding if the bride and groom want them to! Actually my sister and I are going to do a funny song for my Fi, but it’s a secret! What really bothers me is that she doesn’t think that her son’s wedding is exiting enough, she needs entertainment!

Whatnow?: I agree with you 100%! Nothing is more boring than seeing some family member get down with the eukelele or some other such non professional entertainment. Trust me - a band is MORE than enough to keep people occupied.

The more posts I look at the more I realize that there are so many stupid poeple in this world!!! How could you say let alone think that your son'rs wedding will be boring and that having someone play an instrument would not be. This is one of the reasons why I don't want to have kids becsue if they were as stupid as some of the poeple in this world i wouldn't want them.

Okay I went off on a bit of a rant, but why don't people understand that if you have nothing nice to say, keep your mouth shut!!

Tell your FMIL never to invite me to one of her parties, b/c I like to dance all night! Do what you want and don't listen to her! Nonesense!

I also answered you on the newlywed board.

I'm with you on this WhatNow!!! I personally feel that too many readings or poems or whatever it is she wants, tends to make the party boring... People want to eat, drink and DANCE the night away!

My FH and I put it to the band very politely...if you give the microphone to anyone but the best man for the toast, and the priest and my dad for the blessings...we will not tip you. LOL.

There is NOTHING worse than stopping a party completely for some inane presentation of contrived talent of a family member or friend. If they are not Van Halen, Marc Anthony, Whitney Houston, or Andrea Bocelli...there is no need for them to be grabbing the mic (And even they, with the exception of Van Halen are questionable...lol). And yes, kids are cute, but not for entertaining a room full of 200 people when you are paying a band or DJ 2000-7000 bucks to do so!

Tell her to go watch the Golden Girls in the banquet managers office if she wants to be entertained.

WhatNow?
Ignore the FMIL, she may be having some weird concotion of a Russian Brighton Wedding in her mind, with live entertainment nonetheless...

For those not knowing, some Russian bands will bring dancers/performers to the wedding, and then the bride and groom are no longer the center of attention... I saw this once on tape, and boy was it inappropriate...

Oh, yea and tell Sam (the MC) to be careful as to whom the Mike is given too....

Is she not American? I know that at a few 'real' Irish weddings I've been to they've read cards from people who didn't make it to the wedding. They also had a sing song, step dancers ect.... I was at my friends & after a while it became ENOUGH!!
My Fi is the only one in his family who doesn't live in Ireland. So they (his family) have all these ideas of what's going to go on at our wedding. I made SURE they knew what was going to happen. I agreed to let his niece do a dance number. (she is VERY talented & has won MANY awards!!) But that's about all besides some great music & dancing!

Misty, I told my band leader the same exact thing!! I was super super cautious in selecting a band just for this reason...I wanted them to understand who is and who is not allowed to have the mic that night. Otherwise, it will turn into a circus! I have a great aunt who used to be a lounge singer but all she knows now is Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey and insists on singing it at every family occasion!! HELP!!

Re: Entertainment at the wedding? long vent!

OMG. Just make sure that the band leader DOESN'T back down. Put someone on great aunt watch, if they see her going for the mic, have her tackled! LOL. Uch lounge music at a wedding. EEK!

At my sisters surprise birthday party, her new fiance (he proposed that night) made a speech....then for some reason, his father made a speech, then his mother felt like she just had to speak because he spoke, then her new husband said well if they are speaking, I will speak, then my sisters dad (we have different dads) said, well someone from this side should say something...and it just kept going and going and going. 8 SPEECHES LATER THE PARTY WAS OVER.

What is wrong with Mimes?

Re: Entertainment at the wedding? long vent!

Nothing! Paid entertainment is one thing.....families that need spotlight is another!

Nothing is wrong with Mimes, if you like them and they make you happy. I always found them creepy- but I also don't like clowns much either. I just know Stef and mimes are not her thing. That's all.
They are for your e-party, right? And I also think that you decided you want them. This poor girl has an insane MIL telling her everyone will be bored at their reception- which is just not true.

There should be a law that states that FMIL 's should stay out of the bride's wedding planning.

Mimes are for the wedding and they will be in holiday gear jumping around for the pre coctail and cocktail hr.

Plus we will have Christmas Caroling as well..

Re: Entertainment at the wedding? long vent!

Oh, I am definitely talking to Sam (MC) about the whole issue! we already decided that there are going to be 4 short toasts: moh, BM and both parents. My dad was trying to convince us to let him read a card from my g'parents who
are living in Russia, but I was like: no way! The card is meant for us, not all our guests, who don't even know the G'parents! If you don't tackle this problem now each one of my relatives is going to want to weep into the microphone for 20 minutes! (I have one aunt who ALWAYS cries whenever she tries to talk at family gatherings) We are setting up a little station where everyone who has something to say will be videotaped, so we can watch them after we come back form the HM. I saw that done once and thought it was a very clever idea, this way everyone can party, but no one gets ignored and offended!
