Entertainment at the wedding? long vent!

Original post by What-Now

So, last night my future MIL said to my Fi that she is worried that our wedding will be boring! He (the smart boy that he is) replied that us getting married should be entertainment enough! Besides there is going to be dancing and the usual garter toss and of course The First Dance, and most importantly our friends and family together having fun, talking and dancing! FMIL said it’s best when someone does some funny poetry reading and/or plays a musical instrument at the reception, otherwise people will be bored, because, and I quote: 'nobody wants to dance the whole night'! ***! First off all, I want to dance the whole night!
Second of allI think it’s much more boring when someone’s 12 year old cousin starts playing violin in the middle of the reception while all people want to do is dance and talk to each other! I have been to enough wedding to know that! I swear sometimes that woman says the weirdest things! (I only learned about this conversation later, after he hung up the phone with her and I asked what was the problem) Just venting! Thanks for listening!
Just wanted to add: there is nothing wrong with someone performing at the wedding if the bride and groom want them to! Actually my sister and I are going to do a funny song for my Fi, but it’s a secret! What really bothers me is that she doesn’t think that her son’s wedding is exiting enough, she needs entertainment!

LOVE the Christmas Carol idea. I think that is really elegant, very Charles Dickson.

Your wedding is not for the entertaining of your MIL. The day is in part for the joining together of 2 families, IMO I think the 2 people that should be the happiest is the bride and groom. They are the ones that will remember this day the most after the memory has faded for most. Do what makes you and your FI happy. If she is bored she can always leave. I cannot believe anyone would have such thoughts towards their son's wedding. It is not a show after all what kind of entertainment does she expect???

The mere fact that your FMIL had enough nerve to tell her son that she thinks his wedding will be boring - proves to me she is off her rocker!! What nerve people have!!!!!

I don't think anyone likes to sit around for too long, they came to celebrate and I think most people want to dance all night....has she been to any weddings lately???

WhatNow,
How does the videotaping booth work? With a guest as a volunteer and a private video camera or the main video camera? I am just curious, this may be a solution for us too to keep toasts at bay...

FH's grandpa had his b-day party, and toward the end the toasts just kept on rolling and rolling... People stop to listen to them after a while, and it gets boring...

I am laughing at your post, it really seems ludicriou (sp) that this is what she is worried about. The best part of a wedding is the dancing and seeing people you don't see often.

Who does she think is going to recite poetry?

charliesgirl - There should be a law that states that FMIL 's should stay out of the bride's wedding planning LOL

I can't believe your FMIL would say somethig like that. Your wedding will and should be the time of your life and you do not need outside entertainers to do so (unless you want the..just not necessary!)

Boy, I thought my MIL had nerve to tell me my video was boring - She said it's all dancing - how boring - tell me when something good happens. She only came in the room when her daughter was on the screen! Meanwhile DH and I even fastforwarded and only showed her parts where her family and friends were on screen. She still was bored. DH and I were thrilled and hysterical laughing watching the video and so was everyone else (well father, grandparents and aunt and uncle...darling sister watched by herself in fast forward and also only hit play when her and her BF were on the screen.)!!

Whatnow?, I can't believe that your FMIL is afraid that your wedding may be boring! What does she have in mind?

R&T - there is nothing wrong with mimes, if they are your idea. If you want mimes at your wedding, go for it!

Lastly, I disagree about the law against FMILs helping with wedding plans. I may be in the minority here, but I have a wonderful FMIL who is helping me tremendously. She is not butting her nose where it doesn't belong. She has visited numerous vendors with me, and when she has a question to ask, she asks for my permission before asking her question. I keep telling her it's not necessary to seek my permission, but I realize she's doing it because she doesn't want to risk stepping on my toes. I wish evryone here who are having problems with their FMIL had one like mine! (I don't mean to brag, it's just that I need my FMIL's help with my wedding).

I'm in the minority with Julybaby - my mom lives in Texas so my FMIL has been a godsend. She has been helping me with all my vendor appts, has gone to appts I couldn't make, has fronted deposits for us in order to hold dates...awesome. She has a special place in my heart for all her help....

Alina,

I am not sure how the whole video booth thing is going to work! We spoke with our photographer and he said it can be done. I think we are just going to ask Sam to announce that bride and groom would love to hear from their guests and a have a special memory on their video blah, blah, blah! I am not sure if we are going to use a separate camera for this or use the one that comes with the video/photo package!

Ok, you'll have to keep me posted how this turns out!!! I don't think I want to dedicate the cameraman to the taping of the toasts, but I also feel bad asking someone else to do it (i.e. a guest).

Maybe we'll do it during the cocktail hour, prior to the ceremony?
