envelope addressing question?

I noticed some people saying that they address the inner envelope ?? what is this ?

you write the names of the people on the inner envelope so that they know who is invited

EX:
Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Peter and Mary

(Peter and Mary are the kids)

OR a more informal way is to write John, Jane, Peter, and Mary
