envelope question

when do you use Ms. and Miss? What is the difference

Re: envelope question

I would use Miss. if I was addressing something to someone young like under 25ish, and Ms. if I was addressing someone single but a little older.

Traditionally, 'Miss' was meant to apply to an unmarried female (girl or woman) of any age, but many adult women prefer Ms.

I suggest using 'Ms.' for any adult unmarried woman or any married woman using her own name, unless she's a 'Dr.' Use 'Miss' for girls 17 and under.

But there are differing schools of thought on this.

Here's more info from The Knot.

I have one for everyone.... What if the woman is widowed? Is it still Mrs. John Doe or does it become Ms. John Doe?

^^ If she is widowed, it is still Mrs. John Doe.

She is Mrs. until and unless she remarries or changes her name. I believe Ms. is preferred when the woman is a divorcee but I could be wrong.

ETA:
The Ms thing for young women has always been up for debate. Personally, I didn't care if someone addressed a wedding invitation to me as 'Miss' when I was single - and I was single until I was 35.

If i know they are single, i used Miss. If i didn't know or they were divorced, i out Ms. I prefer Miss for myself....sounds younger! I don't really think it matters.
