I know that my venue likes to put out escort cards or table cards on a little table they put out after the cocktail hour. I was told they don't put it out at first, they hide it, because otherwise the guests will go and flop in their chairs, mess up the place settings, ect. and ruin the look of the tables. However, once they're told 'Table 5' or whatever, do I also need to do a place card to give them assigned seating? I'm not having huge tables, there will probably be 8-10 at each. Would it be OK to not bother telling them exactly which seat to sit in?

Re: Escort cards AND place cards?
I think that escort cards are the same thing as place cards. They just tell the guest which table to go to and not the specific seat.

Thats what we did, they had a place card, and they picked what seat at the table, why waste the extra time, money, and effort,

Re: Escort cards AND place cards?
Escort cards tell you which table. Really formal ones are little envelopes with the name on the outside and the table # on the inside. Now they're usually just cards with the name and the table #, sometimes folded, sometimes not. I think originally they had the name of the escort on the outside, and the person they were supposed to be escorting on the inside. Very old-fashioned!
Place cards are put at the table setting so people know their assigned seat.
I just wanted to know if most people did both or didn't bother. I know some people put up a big poster-sized chart of who is at what table, and then have names at the specific seat. I don't want to do that.

You don't tell them exactly what seat to sit in. Just the table#

Re: Escort cards AND place cards?
I have been to events where there were both escort cards and placecards.
You are right - placecards are ASSIGNED seating, and escort cards direct guests as to the table.
If you end up doing placecards, and assigned seating, I would recm'd a seating chart - rather than individual cards. Something simple on a large print-out just to guide guests as to their table. Once they arrive at the table, they will see the placecards for their assigned seats.
IMHO - I would go with escort cards - unless it's an absolute requirement by your reception site.
