Essentials for newborn

Essentials for newborn

I have not had my shower yet, and still have no idea of when it will be (Anna, you'll be proud I haven't been registry peaking). But, a friend of mine did ask me if my sister mailed invites out yet (I know she really shouldn't have asked me that), so I'm guessing that she didn't and it's not until later in May.

This is what I have so far:
a crib from my SIL
co-sleeper instead of a bassinet
baby bouncer
baby bjorn
new born undershirts for umbilical cord
a few dozen newborn diapers.
crib sheet
2 blankets

I'm due June 15th, and can't help but think what if I deliver early. So, I'm thinking that if I don't have my shower by mid May, I should go ahead and get some essentials. Can you moms please help with what I MUST HAVE for the baby's arrival? I'm planning on breastfeeding.

thanks!!!

Breastpads
Lanolin
nursing bras - If you dont want to spend the $ for those I found that VS Body By Victoria are great and you can wear them when you are done breastfeeding
receiving blankets
FYI Emma went through about 150 newborn diapers and she was 7lbs 15oz when she was born
If I think of more Ill let you know

how about a vaporizer. DOn't buy too many newborn diapers - you will probably get some at your shower and you never know how big (or small) your baby wil be. Justin was in Preemie diapers for a while (he weighed 5lbs.).

You never know, your friend may have asked you that to throw you off!!!

Is a vaporizer something that I have to have the first couple of weeks in the summer?

Thanks for the ideas, keep em coming!

Hi Niha! Try to be patient with this stuff - you don't want to buy too much before your shower. How far away does your family live?? If, god forbid, you go into labor early, you can just have your Mom or sister run out to BRU for you and get everything you need. They can have everything washed and ready by the time you get home from the hospital. But, if having some things will give you piece of mind, I offer my list and some advice.

Just FYI regarding the Bjorn - you will not use this in the very first weeks after the baby is born. Their neck muscles are just not strong enough for it and the baby is likely to be more uncomfortable than it is worth.

You'll also need:
- washcloths
- hooded baby towels
- burpcloths or cloth diapers (but, be sure to get the thicker kind by Gerber)
- at least 10 receiving blankets (we sometimes used 2 per day)
- at least 3 crib sheets
- mattress pads (under the crib sheet to absorb wettness)
- changing pad w/terry cloth covers (at least 2)
- bottles, nipples, bottle liners, formula - anything you might need to feed the baby. You never know if BFing is going to work out for you and your baby, so you must be prepared just in case! Don't over buy, but have at least one day's supply.
- a boppy pillow or some type of nursing pillow
- I recommend buying two boxes of newborn diapers - one box of Huggies and one box of Pampers - you never know which brand will fit or absorb best for your baby. We learned the hard way that Huggies sukks, BUT some parents swear by them. We, however, are a Pampers family.
- two boxes of baby wipes - I use Huggies Natural Care - no perfumes, no alcohol.
- infant rectal thermometer
- infant nail file
- mittens to cover their hands and prevent facial scratches

If I think of anything else, I'll reply again!

Re: Essentials for newborn

Thanks ladies!
I guess I just want the stuff for peace of mind, it's been a healthy pregnancy so far, so I'm not expecting to go into labor early, but I will print out these lists just in case. I go on pregnancy boards too and it seems like all the other June mommies-to-be have had their showers and their nurseries are all set up
It's true that someone can buy the stuff while I'm in the hospital. So, I'll just play it by ear after we are in our new place. The last thing I want to do now is buy more stuff and then pack it up!
