estranged parents - anyone else dealing with this?

I had a very tumultuous childhood and was thrown out of the house by mother at the age of 18. I have not talked to her since. She is around and my brothers talk to her but I have no relationship with her. I was wondering if anyone else is dealing with a similar situation and how are you dealing with it? I know I have my stepmom and dad but somehow its not quite the same as the wedding is getting close I think this is starting to take a toll on me. Anyone else out there with similar problems?

In my case, my parents got divorced when I was 18 and I don't have much of a relationship with my father anymore. I talk to him occasionally although I'm on the non-speaking side at the moment. I have no intentions of inviting him because it'll be a lot of stress on me and my mom as well. He hasn't been a part of my life in some major years of development. He met my fiance, once and very briefly, before we were dating. There would be no one at the wedding for him to talk to, I wouldn't want him to bring a guest, and my mom certainly wouldn't speak to him. Right now I'm struggling on whether to tell him I'm getting married! He still doesn't know I'm engaged.

So I think you should do whatever you feel is best. It's going to be your day and you won't need any drama or additional stress. You want to relax and be yourself. It's a difficult decision to make even if you already know the answer.

I'm definitely not inviting her - its kind of the same situation you described. My wedding is only 4 months away so definitely not enough time to do enough repair for the relationship in time for the wedding for me to not be emotional basketcase. I just get sad when I think about other brides with their moms

I hear you. I won't have a dad to walk me down the aisle.

But I'm asking my mom to do that since she's been more of a parent to me anyway.

It's tough, but you'll get through it. Like you said, it's a short amount of time to repair the relationship in 4 months, but there'll be plenty of time after and hopefully she can become a part of your life in the future and be a part of your new family.

Biology is not what a Mother makes.

It's sad but true...

Don't feel bad for whom you don't have, appreciate those you do
