Etiquette for Inviting Family/Friends with Guests?
Our number of guests is continuously creeping up and I'm starting to panic! If it keeps getting bigger - we may have to switch halls, which I Really don't want to do!
What is the proper etiquette for inviting people with guests? I think that if someone is married, the spouse must be invited, correct? What if the person has a boyfriend or girlfriend who you don't know, or if they aren't in a relationship? Does everyone over a certain age need to be invited with a guest? (I hope not!)
Please help!
Thank you!

I know that if they have a spouse, engaged, or have been in a long time relationship their 'other' must be invited, but I'm not following that rule. Otherwise, we would have 400+ guests, and we can't afford that.

Well, I don't really care what the etiquette is to be quite honest, I'm doing what is best for us, and that is: If you don't know anyone, I will be inviting you with a guest, so that means no one, because ALL of our friends know eachother, so unless you're married, engaged or dating someone for a long time, expect to not get an invite with a guest to my wedding. I'm not paying for some person I don't know to be at my wedding, when everyone will at least know one or two people (in most cases everyone) at their table. A little snotty on my part, but the money that we are paying pp is outrageous and I can't afford to waste any space or money. JMO.

I am inviting everyone with a guest, regardless. I cannot imagine having to go to a wedding by myself. Did that mean that we had to cut some people off the list? Yes, but I don't really need to invite a college friend that I have not spoken to in a while or one of our parent's coworkers.

We are trying to buy a house and pay for a wedding so our rule is if they are not engaged, married or living with someone they are not being invited with a guest. I'm not even inviting any children that aren't a niece or nephew, otherwise I would have about 30 kids and not just 9.

We are inviting with boyfriend or engaged or not, any combination with a guest. It stinks to be at a wedding alone when all couples are out on dance floor and you are standing like a wallflower., jmo.

Re: Etiquette for Inviting Family/Friends with Guests?
we only invited people who were engaged or with someone for a significant amount of time with a guest. we were not going to pay $100 a head for someone to bring their flavor of the month. when doing the tables, we ensured that those attending solo would be with other people that they knew. you need to do what is best for you - if space is tight, i wouldn't hesitate to get rid of the 'unnecessary' guests. JMO!!!

Karen those were my exact sentiments. We had one person who kept talking about 'finding a date for my wedding' well she was invited solo and didn't get it at first & asked another friend on this board who told her what 'proper ettiquette' was. No name or & guest means you only. Thanks Princess99!
The only people I invited with a guest who weren't in serious relationships were my daughter (21) and DH's 2 nieces(19 & 13). And the only kids I invited were my niece & my cousin(7 & 9) who were both FG's.

Except for my couins who are like 13-18 Everyone is getting invited with a guest. I don't thnk its fair to invite with out. I would be ticked if I got invited without a guest. But you gotta do what You gotta do. Good Luck!

Re: Etiquette for Inviting Family/Friends with Guests?
I invited every unmarried person with a guest. I have been dating my Fh, for 12 years, and wasn't enaged until this past August....so to not be invited with him...would have been rude....What I have noticed is that if the person isn't in a 'relationship' they are responding back without a guest. I don't think most people want to bring a 'first date' to a wedding....

I actually posted about this recently, here's the link:
Personally, I am only inviting with a guest if the person is married (obviously), engaged, in a long term relationship, or really doesn't know anyone. We have a huge guest list already and cannot afford to invite single people with random guests. Also, it gives your single friends an opportunity to mingle - who knows, maybe there will be some sparks!
