So, I was married on Saturday (woohoo! promise my review is coming as soon as I have pics )

I was back at work yesterday, and of course people keep asking me to see my wedding ring, etc.

Now, my ring isn't the typical diamond wedding band - I've got simpler tastes, and I'm not comfortable wearing something flashy like that, so I had what I think is a beautiful stone-free ring custom made to go with my engagement ring.

most of the women at work not only have diamond bands, but HUGE ones, with GIGANTIC diamond engagement rings. Now, I've got no problem with that - it's not my taste, but we're all allowed our own tastes.

So, one woman I work with, who is a good 20 years older than me, asks to see my ring. I show her. She goes 'oh... isn't that.... pretty...' with this tone that clearly says 'what IS that piddly little thing?' I mentioned that I'd decided to go with a simpler ring because I'm not comfortable wearing all that bling.

Her response: 'Oh. Well, that's because you're still young.'

WHAT???? What the heck does my age have to do with anything? Plenty of young girls want diamond rings! And plenty of older women choose simpler rings. I was so angry, I nearly lost it. It was SO rude and SO belittling - the verbal equivalent of a pat on the head - like 'aw, look at the little girl playing dress up and pretending to be married! Isn't she cute?'

My ring is just a band of diamonds because I didn't want the single stone..it is just not me and I get that all the time....they always ask...is this your ring? Not everyone wants a rock!!!

I can't stand people who think the size of the diamond is everything. It's so cliche to think everyone wants a big diamond.

I personally didn't want anythign overly bling. I use the PC a lot and work with my hands doing a lot of different things and dont want that in the way..also I think if the ring is proportional to your finger, it looks the prettiest....!!!!

that is HORRIBLE!! don't waste anymore energy on her. and NOT THAT this is a defense, but there's this 'Sisterhood' mentality that exists for married women/ and single women too. frequently at big moments in life - there are jokes, giggles , jabs, ...that 'oh lord welcome to the club' mentality. AGAIN - THIS IS NOT NOT a defense for her. but maybe she was trying to be a bit maternal and wise - not that what she said is....ugg i'm spinning in a circle on this. bottom line - don't waste another minute on thinking bout it...and in the same breath - remember, she MIIIIGHT have in her weird unrefined way, meant well by it

That is rude!

I, like you, didn't want anything flashy and opted for something simple--DH and I are very active and I work with my hands a lot, so I don't see the point. The size of your ring/rock is not indicative of how much a person loves you or you them...people who are like that are very materialistic and oftentimes equate material things with love.
