If you've always talked about how much you hate DJs, why would you have one for your wedding? 900 bucks is a lot of money to me...

it is! but it's as if reading how some people get DJs for 2, 3, even $4000 makes me feel like this is a deal I should take advantage of while I can - that's why I think I need to step away for a minute lol.

Our DJ has a package for 900, and he is great. He's not obnoxious at all, I've seen him at 2 weddings. If thats your style, you just have to look for the right fit. I wouldn't DIY the music, there's too much room for error.

I'd take error over not hearing the music we want, though. So far the people we got quotes from, and two other companies, both let us know that we could only request new music up to a point - it will just get mixed in with songs they have, mixes already made, etc.
The ceremony we need specific songs, but can do those on cd, no problem.
The CH will be old standards etc, so again no problem.
But when it comes to the reception, if we can't hear our music for the four hours, why bother paying them?

My MOH had her 100-person afternoon wedding at a B&B in Conn. and they did their own music exactly as you mentioned. It went perfectly, people danced and everything worked out great. It will take time on your part to program a few hours of music, but it is so easily doable with today's technology. If you don't want any of the DJ extras, why pay all that money for someone who is essentially going to just push 'play'?
Best of luck in whatever you decide!

So, I just want to thank everyone for their advice - all of the girls who said do the DJ, I'm now going to use all of your reasons to talk myself into enjoying it because....FFIL just booked one for us as a 'surprise'...
I should have seen it coming, knowing FH's dad, but I'm really annoyed. FH is trying to be optimistic but he's aggravated about it, too, so....idk.
guess I'll just make a verrrrrrrrry long 'must play' list for them now
