Ever feel like your career went horribly wrong?
I know that I went to school for the stuff that is right for me. And, my job title pretty much matches what I want to be doing...But, for some reason I am finding that I am doing things that were NOT part of the plan...
For example, I have been carrying so much stuff (work supplies) around with me lately, that I had to leave work early yesterday and stay in bed all evening and all night until this morning from physical pain. So, there were a million things that I wanted to do at home, that I never got a chance to do...
And, now my company is adding new functions into my position that are COMPLETELY unrelated to what I should be doing. And, of course, my colleagues and I will not be receiving an additional dime for any of it...
(in this situation it's me and ALL of my colleagues who feel this way- so I'm not just whining...)
But, had anyone else ever felt like something went horribly wrong with their career?

Re: Ever feel like your career went horribly wrong?
Yes...I started out on the right path (Advertising/Media) did it for 8 years (changing companies a couple times) and then got laid off...now I am doing something NOT related to the field I studied and HATE IT...besides the fact that I have to travel 2 hrs each way to get to it.I've been searching for work in Suffolk county so that I can have a baby...BUT I cant find anything!!
I feel for you!

Re: Ever feel like your career went horribly wrong?
yes! although my situation is a little different than yours. i went to grad school for what i really want to do, but while in school i had an unrelated full-time job. that meant i didn't get to do internships, assistantships etc. so since i've graduated i haven't been able to get a job in my intended field b/c of lack of experience. instead i'm still in a job related to the unrelated one i had during school. arghhh........i'm sorry about your situation. do you think all your colleagues and you could have a meeting w/management to discuss your concerns?

I hate my job and the career path I've chosen. Nuff said. Too bad though I really don't know what I want to be when I grow up...

Re: Ever feel like your career went horribly wrong?
Yes. I went to grad school and I can't find much of anything. I technically work in my field. The title I hold is a psych position but they added so many unrelated things that I feel like I don't hold a psych position at all! And it is extremely difficult to find a new job that pays what I make now. Boy I am seriously depressed now.......
So, yeah, I feel your pain!

Re: Ever feel like your career went horribly wrong?
I'm with you! I went to school for journalism and I work at a newspaper, so it sounds about right, but it really isn't. I thought I would be a reporter, but I've spent the past three years as a design editor, doing layout and what not. Now that the wedding is over, it's time for me to focus on getting a new, and more challenging, job.

Re: Ever feel like your career went horribly wrong?
oh boy do i ever (Suven, you are in HR right? I feel your pain)I knew from the minute I graduated college that I made a mistake. I am not cut out for the Corporate World, I hate the rat race, and I refuse to kiss a**. I cannot wait for the day I get a chance to do something diff. Also, I cant imagine having a baby and still working in Manhattan leaving the house at 7 and not getting home til 7, 730.

That's pretty much my story.
Although, like you Suven, I do things that are not my job. I pretty much am a part time receptionist ( in addition to a million other things) while my title says Marketing Supervisor & I have been here 6 years.

Re: Ever feel like your career went horribly wrong?
I agree with a lot of these comments - I wanted to be a lawyer since high school and yet for the past 7 years I've been kicking myself for choosing such a stressful, boring and unfulfilling job.But sometimes I can't help but think that isn't the career itself that went wrong but...more like I just don't want to work in general!
Also, it's interesting how the grass always seems greener...a lot of what you all said you do in this post sounds way more interesting and exciting to me than my job, yet you are all not happy, so maybe I wouldn't be either!
