Ever feel like your parents don't want you to be more sucessful than they are?
Sometimes I think my father in particular gets nervous when his kids:
a) know more than he does about anything
b) start to earn near what he does
c)might have a better life than he does (better relationships with friends, nicer home, more travel)
I know it's a big taboo, but I wonder if other parents are like this

I guess I'm lucky. I don't think my parents feel this way. I think they want me to succeed so I will be able to take care of them eventually!

I think I would die before my parents did if they needed me to take care of them. They would put me in my grave!

I mean my mother has issues with me. Probably why we can't get along. I am young and makes the same amount of money she does and she can't seem to have a conversation with me without mentioning that she is the 'MOTHER'..........haven't you seen my rants about her before.........

same here!! thank god for that!! they just want my brothers and I to be happy in whatever we do!! and they also back us 100%

My mom and dad are big supporters of the generation after you should have it better than you did. That has often helped me in my decision making.
Meaning when I think of having kids I think of making sure I can give them mininum what I had and open the doors to them to choose to have a better lifestyle than I did....as far as spirtual growth, financial growth and physical growth.

i have the opposite problem, i will never be as successful as my parents, however luckily they don't ever pressure me into anything, i do it to myself...

This is my dad. He bought me a car when I graduated from college. I pull up to his house with the car and ask him if he wants to drive. He looks at me like I am crazy and says 'no why do you think I bought you this car' he is hilarious. He jumps in the passenger seat and says ' I am so blessed, I live to see my daughter driving me around'

Not at all!! My parents always encouraged us to suceed, and if that meant us doing better than them, so be it!!

My parents sound like yours. They believe in each generation doing better financially, and also educationally so I know they would not be jealous if I surpassed them, which I have not done so financially (yet!), but have in education level. They only want us to have the best of everything in life.
My inlaws on the other hand I think are slightly jealous of us earning the same income as them. We roughly make the same - I make more than my mother in law and my DH makes slightly less than his father. But his dad is worried that we wil surpass him- they have a strange relationship- more competitive.

Clueless - my father is exactly like this. He has issues. But once you realize they are like this, it allows you to see their motivations more clearly and get past them.
But sometimes its sad when I see other people who have such wonderful parents.

Every day of my life! Every time I bring up going to med school I get a huge lecture on what am I going to do when I have kids and I am working like crazy!
