Last night, as I was taking something out of the microwave in our new apartment, a huge cockroach - I swear it was the size of a gerbil -came running out from under the microwave! I know, GROSS. I screamed and ran out of the kitchen. FH was able to spray it to death with roach killer, thank goodness.
Maintenance is coming to spray next Wednesday, but my mother thinks this may not even help much, since we're in an apartment complex.
Has anyone had any experience with roaches in an apartment complex? Will they keep coming back even after the place is sprayed? If so, the house hunting is going to start very soon.
ETA: I'm still so skeeved about it. I can't think of anything else. I really need to get a grip.

Re: EW! A COCKROACH!
i live in an apartment and i had the same problem when i first moved in, it got so bad i was crying cause they were around all the time, i put everything in tuberware and i m so clean so i didnt know what else to do... it really sux cause when u spray they just move from apartment to apartment
i did learn something really important tho. once the exterminator comes do not use RAID on ur own, RAID deactivates what the exterminator uses..have them come like once a month for the next couple of monthes..then like every 3 or 6 monthes and that should solve ur problem..or get a cat, roaches stay away from apartments with cats, dont really know y..something about the smell, or there scared of um cause cats will eat them :)

When I lived in Queens I put down the roach traps and they worked really well- that with frequent extermination....

Re: EW! A COCKROACH!
i had this problem when i lived in md. it was awful. they were all over the place. it got so bad i had to move, i broke my lease, ended up in court a year later. big mess, but at least i was bug free after that. sorry to say that it probably won't matter how many times the exterminator comes, unless he also does every other apt. try to put all your food in tupperware or other containers so that at least they don't get into that. good luck, i feel your pain...

Are cockroaches a city thing? I have never seen one or even heard of anyone having a problem on the island!

If it was big and moves fast, it couldbe a waterbug. You can't move fast enough for them. THe heat and water brings them out.

They are more prevalent in urban areas, but they show up anywhere. I saw a couple in supermarkets.... made me abandon my cart and shop elsewhere. Yuck!!

Re: EW! A COCKROACH!
Do you know if it was a madagascar hissing cockroach or a broad wood cockroach.. if it was the first one.. the government of Madagascar could press civil charges against you.. you might need legal advice.
BTW.. JUST KIDDING!!!!!
But on a serious note.. the cockroach has survived for 250 million years.
There are 69 million in the US.. but because of your actions.. there are now only 68,999,999 million. The ramifacations are quite astounding.
Ever see the movei 'night of the Creeps'?
Well.. nevermind...
(don't mind me.. i'm just giddy it's Friday.)
enjoy the weekend!

Re: EW! A COCKROACH!
yes u can still put the traps down after they spray, those r fine..plus it sounds nuts but i went around my house and put this kind of putty stuff into every nook or cranny or hole that i could possibly see. also u can fill them with steel wool it prevents them fromgetting into ur house..my whole kitchen is one big ball of putty....i feel like an exterminator i unfortunatly delt with this problem too many times

Re: EW! A COCKROACH!
Eeeewwww gross!!!!!!! Is all I have to say!
I’m getting paranoid and freaked out just reading about this. We are having a bug problem at work actually. We’ve seen two roaches in the past week and a half. I am soooooooooooo afraid of them it’s not even funny. We saw one two days ago at work and I jumped on my chair and was screaming “somebody kill it please before it gets me”. LOL when I say I get scared I really get scared. I remember one time a couple of years ago when I was living at home before I got married I was sleeping in my room and I had a big shopping bag on the floor with no food mind you and I was laying down on my bed and I hear a ruffling sound coming from the bag and I’m thinking to myself what the heck is that noise and didn’t think nothing of it, I thought it was probably a breeze from the the wind blowing on the bag. Then all of a sudden the most biggest roach I have ever seen in my life came crawling out. I ran screaming from my room and refused to sleep there for about 2 weeks!
I haven’t seen any in my apt. yet (knock on wood) It’s a brand new renovated apt. they did leave some holes though so we have to cover them up, but on the other hand we do have a cat (it’s DH’s cat), so I hope its true what they say about cats eating bugs…..LOL LOL LOL When DH had his own apt. he found a dead mouse once near his cat.

Re: EW! A COCKROACH!
I also had this problem in my Apt. and I used Combat. They really work. Youe need to replace them every few months, but after you use them the roaches all say bye bye.
I have allergy induced asthma and roaches are high on the list of things that make me have an attack. I felt great after using the combat.
I never let the exterminator in because I did not want the chemicals all over my kitchen.

Re: EW! A COCKROACH!
We had them!! We bought some stupid thing we found in the store that you plug in to the wall and it send waves out that kill them. Well, after a month of it being plugged in, we haven't seen one again and that was almost two years ago!!
I tell DH all the time I want to move, just because they were here. I said when we move out of this apartment we are not taking anything with us, ANYTHING. This is why I will not bring anything from my bridal shower into this apartment. I am soooo tired of living in Joe's Apartment!!!
