Ok, so as many of you know, I am temping for the Greater Boston Food Bank. Its cool (the organization, at least)...
There's the office part (where I work) and the warehouse that has all of the food (its UNREAL how much stuff they have!). Naturally there is a MAJOR emphasis on things being sanitary....handling food, etc. (I'm sure some of you see where this is going............)
So, the warehouse guys are really cool. Much more down to earth and easy to talk to than some of the snooty office people. But man, I was ready to hurl this afternoon....
At lunch time everyone (office and warehouse crew) hang out in the lunchroom. I went into the lunchroom to use the microwave and then I grabbed myself a plastic spoon and fork. Soon after I grabbed my utensils I witness a warehouse guy changing all of the garbage bins. He's coughing and sniffling everywhere (because its FRICKING FREEZING HERE). Then he proceeds to grab a ton of plastic utensils from a storage box and refill the tray that I grabbed mine from........garbage hands, coughing everywhere................!!!!!!!
Finally, after he does this he goes back into the warehouse to handle more food!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Needless to say, my utensils got a thorough cleaning before I chowed down. But you'd think that people handling food would be more cautious.
I never believed my mom when she told me to 'wash all of the fruit before eating' but I do now!!!!!!!!

When i worked for deli department some bad stuff would happen to the food.
Like rotissere turkeys .. were turkeys deep fried this way they took less time to make IoI
Meat that was not covered in slim and stinky was still used even if date was bad. (u only could do it with stuff that wasn't natural because natural stuff just went bad faster then the date given)
Cheese that was wrapped by us that was moldy we would scrape off the mold and re-wrap it.
Salads if they didn't come in and we ran out we would wash mayo off and re-dress it. EEEEKS!
If your into kosher foods don't go to a non-kosher store because no one cares about the rules. Stuff sits too for way to long.

Right before i left we started to get credit for unsold - pass date foods so that kinda stopped. But the cheese things goes on everywhere.... because hard cheese you can safely do it. Just is kinda gross.
Deep fried turkeys still go on..even the ribs. IF you run out and don't have stuff up in time you had to come up with the product and deep frying was the quickest solution.
Kosher foods... still till this day i cringe. If i had to have kosher, stick with kosher markets or kosher deli's that have a high kosher clientelle. Don't go the a king kullen in the most non jewish neighborhood and expect fresh stuff.
