exercise = weight gain ?!?!?!

can someone please explain this to me?

this week was my first week of my workout bootcamp. its been intense and i have been really sore. Well today i weighed in and i am up almost 5 lbs this week!

i dont understand. I know muscle weighs more than fat but could i really have gained 5 lbs of muscle in one week?!?!?!

i have been following weight watchers and doing good with eating so im confused. I really can't be putting on weight right before the wedding.

is this normal or what is going on?

dont get discouraged....it can be a combo of muscle weight, and water weight... i bet u lost inches tho!

next week u could see a big drop. sometimes the scale takes a bit longer to catch up....trust me, i'm a professional dieter! lol

Yup could be your period.

Also, did you eat salty food yesterday?...bc then it could be water weight!

Muscle doesn't weigh more than fat. Muscle and fat weigh the same.

1lb of muscle = 1 lb of fat. However, 1lb of fat takes up more room, whereas 1 lb of muscle is more condensed.

You could be gaining weight in the form of muscle.

OR

it could just be taking a while for your results to show. I'm sure you know from experience with WW that after you mkae a lifestyle change like that it doesnt always show up the first..or even second week. Your results might not show up until 3 weeks from now. but dont get discouraged. Excercise is a good thing!!

This is normal. There will be fluctuations. Its an ebb and flow cycle. You have to give it time for your body to adjust. Make sure youre drinking tons of water. But dont get discouraged about the scale. In fact you should try to stay away from it. Its not the gain or loss that matters anyway, its the inches. Dont get discouraged, youre doing awesome!!

Whip out the tape measurer and measure waist, hips, thights, arms, etc. try not to pay attention to the actual numbers.

THANK YOU. This is my biggest pet peeve. Muscle does not weigh more than fat....it just takes up less space. A pound is a pound is a pound. If you put a pound of muscle, a pound of fat, and a pound of feathers on a scale, they're all still a pound.

When you introduce exercise into your routine, your muscles start tearing. Then they retain water in order to repair themselves. So the weight gain you're seeing is most likely water weight. Just continue working out and it'll come off eventually.

And unless you're lifting weights like a body builder, chances are, you're not gaining muscle weight. I'm pretty sure it's water weight.

The other option is that you're eating more because you're exercising and that you're not accurately counting activity points vs. food points and not accurately weighing/measuring your foods.

It's actually funny, because we just had a training for WW staff a couple weeks ago, and this was one of the big topics.

Just Remember: NO ONE EVER GOT FAT FROM EXERCISE.

ETA: Instead of looking at the numbers, ask yourself this: What other benefits am I getting from working out?

ITA bust out that pair of jeans that everyone has that they hold on to because 'SOMEDAY' we'll fit into them again.... I would guess you fit into them right now.

I bet you have been drinking a ton of water too (water weight) and you were tiny to begin with so you could be gaining muscle which is where some of the weight might be coming from. I wouldn't sweat it.

Totally agreed. The best way to track your results is measurement and progress pictures. I don't want to be the bearer of bad news but it is practically impossible to gain 5 lbs of muscle in a week. I wish it were that simple! BUT this is not to say that you gained fat or actually anything permanent at all. It could be your horomones, water weight from exercise, if you ate something salty, if you haven't gone to the bathroom ( ) ...all of these things play a factor...don't worry! Time, patience and consistency are all you need with diet and exercise and you WILL see results!

could be due to the muscle weight.

totaaaaaaaaallly understand what you're saying, and i think everything said here is spot on! exercise is always good for you, and the numbers on the scale are NOT the most important thing!

how your clothes are fitting, how your skin looks, your energy level and the MOST important...how you FEEL from completing a whole week of boot camp! what an amazing accomplishment!!

you WILL reach your goals! i know its important to keep track of weight but if the numbers on the scale are discouraging, what i do honestly is I stay away from the scale for a bit and focus on how i FEEL!

congrats for a week of boot camp and bask in the glow of that huge accomplishment and how you are feeling about your lifestyle changes - FH thinks you're beautiful, we think you're beautiful and you're doing great! focus on THAT!!!

this is why i never get on a scale.

just go by how your clothes feel and look on you.
