I'm a long time vegetarian, but not very good in the kitchen. How do you prepare your tofu? I'm talking details... as in what texture tofu you use, what sauces/marinades you've used, and specifically, how you do it!!!
TIA!

Re: Experienced Tofu Eaters-- Help Please!
I make tofu sometimes in a stir fry. I slice onions, carrots, green/red peppers, broccoli, mushrooms, whatever other veggies I have....
I start with chopped garlic and ginger in a little olive oil on a wok- then add other veggies. After they brown a bit, I had the tofu-which I have cubed. Then I add spices and sauces- like soy sauce, tabasco, red pepper, and this thai red sauce I have (I like spicy food). After you add the tofu, be careful not to break it up with your spatula as it can come apart.
I don't know the firmness of the tofu I buy- never really paid attention.
I'll think of other ways I've prepared it.

press the tofu (i get firm or extra firm) with a plate on top of it on another plaate and then i add two heavy books. press it and drain it for about an hour. then i slice it into magazine thickness. i add a marinade, you can make or use any kind, and broil on one side for 10 minutes, turn over and broil for a bit longer. if it is still wimpy, i cook it longer. i love tofu but this is one of my favorite ways to cook it.

EXTRA FIRM IS THE ONLY WAY TO GO!!!
Make sure you try to remove as much water from the tofu before cooking it. This makes it brown when cooking and it will taste better.
I like to fry the tofu after marinating it.

Extra firm tofu drained. I add it to stirfrys. I also marinate it in soy, teriaki and hoison and bake it until crispy on the outside.
I use soft tofu to make smoothies.

I agree...firm tofu, drained well, baked in the oven about 10 min. each side on a cookie tray sparyed with cooking spray. I would marinate it before or put it in a recipe with a sauce over it. Trader Joes sometimes has some good sauces.
I like what I can do with Tempeh too! Kebobs, honey mustard tempeh, etc.! YUM!

Thank you all for the tofu-recipes. Not to be a complete idiot, but can you all give me more specifics.... I'm talking, how much of what ingredient do you use, how long do you cook it, etc. Lets just say, you're dealing with someone who doesn't work very well in the kitchen! Pretend you're giving a recipe to a child Thanks again!

put a plate on the block of tofu and then a dictionary on top to drain. do this for about 2 hours. nothing too heavy or you'll squish it. drain the water. then cut it into cubes or slices or whatever you like. make or buy a marinade for stir fry or marinades. the thicker the better sometimes. i make a marinade with garlic, ginger, soy sauce, a little drop of vinegar, a little drop of oil, a drop of chili oil, and whisk together. then you can broil it on a cookie sheet with foil or add it to a stir fry. it's 6 am, so i am blocked for more info. good luck!
