Well, I just got the phone call from the dr with the results that I was hoping wouldn't be -- I have gestational diabetes!
So now I have to start diabetic counselling and testing my sugar everyday and whatever else they tell me to do. I have to go for 6 sessions, 3x a week for 2 weeks. And I have to go for a sonogram at the hospital every week until I give birth to make sure I don't have gigunda baby!
And I have to drive to these sessions with a car whose air conditioner doesn't work anymore!! I will not be a happy camper if this heat keeps up!
Since it runs in the family (my father) and since I'm over 35 and since I was overweight (can the list of things against me be any longer?), I guess my odds weren't that great. My mother always said I was my father's daughter -- she ain't kidding, I'm him in more ways then I want to be!!!
Just say a prayer that everything turns out ok with my little Bear Cub -- I hope I don't give birth to a Grizzly!!! Now I have to go home and calm down my neurotic hubby -- he intercepted a phone call when he got home from work (before I got through to him) from the diabetic dr and he has no clue what's going on yet! He's a nervous wreck right now!!

Re: FAILED!!! :(
Wow, can I tell you that you all made me cry this morning!!!!! A good one though!!!! You girls are the best and I appreciate all of your support and encouragement!!!
I calmed Joe down -- the first words out of his mouth were 'that's it -- this is the only one we're having' !!!!!! I laughed and told him that he'll change his tune after he sees his little Bear Cub in person, but he says nope, he was an only child and look how he turned out -- yeah, look how you turned out -- SPOILED!!!
I know everything will be fine, it's just one more added worry and I thought I'd be coasting along for the next 8 1/2 weeks, but instead, I'll be coasting my butt out to more dr's visits!!!
It's ok, I'd go to the ends of the earth for my little Cub!!! I said all along, he/she is stubborn like his/her daddy!!!
Thank you all again, I love you guys!!! You're the best!!!!!

Re: FAILED!!! :(
Deb you may not be into explaining this right now...but what exactly IS gestational diabetes? I only know the very bare basics, but know it's quite common. Are certain people at risk because it is hereditary? What do they do for it? Are you in pain or anything?

Deb, I wish you all the best!! I'm glad you were able to calm Joe down a bit. Just look at it this way...now you get to have a sonogram once a week, so you can look forward to seeing your little cub each week.

Re: FAILED!!! :(
Jenny, 'gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that starts during pregnancy. If you have diabetes, your body isn't able to use the sugar (glucose) in your blood as well as it should, so the level of sugar in your blood becomes higher than normal.'
If you have the following, you can get it: are over 30 (some books say 30, some say 35), were overweight, have a history of it in your family (my dad), have high blood pressure (I don't, mine is the other end -- very low), had a miscarriage (I did) or other complication during birth, had it in a past pregnancy, and several other factors I can't remember right now.
I have to read up more on it, but that's the basics.
Michelle, thanks hon!! I'm sure I'll be down to borrow the book! As for Joe, you are so right!! He is way too funny!! He's of the 'don't think about it or worry about it and it'll go away' mentality!! My nervous Nelly!!!

Re: FAILED!!! :(
Oh Deb, I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this for the rest of the pregnancy But, rest assured - the doctors will take good care of you and bear cub, and you will both be wonderful! Jeff's cousin had GD during her pregnancy, and everything turned out just fine - Mommy and baby are very healthy!
No worries...if you need any encouragement or extra support, we are all here for you!

Re: FAILED!!! :(
Thanks Claud!! It's weird, but I'm not that nervous about it right now. Ask me later! I guess since I grew up with diabetes in my family, it doesn't scare me. Besides, I can't panic -- I have Joe to do that! Somebody has to be the calm one in this relationship! Don't get me wrong, I know this is serious and I'll follow all the dr's instructions and everything, but I can't get myself all worked up about it because first of all, it's no good for us and second, that's not going to solve anything! So I just listen to the dr and go along with everything she says!!!
I'm just concerned about the size of my Bear Cub! One thing, if they decide to do a c-section, at least I won't have to worry about calling Joe in Jersey saying I'm in labor and him flipping out driving home or waking him in the middle of night and him getting all neurotic on me!!!!

Deb .... . I've been MIA for two days and I come back to your news. You'll be fine and your little cub too. I have to 'cash in' some favors from the big guy upstairs, so I'll be asking about you.
Lots of hugs sweetie!

Re: FAILED!!! :(
I'm sorry you have to go through this... But I am sure you will be FINE! My best friend had GD during her pregnancy and was able to control it with her diet. She never needed to get insulin shots, and her baby was only 7 lbs. I'll pray that everything will be okay for you and your little bear cub!

Re: FAILED!!! :(
Dont get yourself all worked up, you and baby will be just fine. There are plenty of babies who are born to mothers who have GD and are perfect. You may not need insulin during your pregnancy, diet alone works for some people, but others may need insulin. Whatever the plan is, just make sure you stick to it. I have seem moms-to-be in the OB/GYN office I used to work at who were 'non-compliant' with thier diet and insulin regimine, and it can be detrimental to you and the baby. People who have GD are at higher risk of becoming diabetic later in life, but that is not always the case. Good luck, we are all praying for you.
