So this is officially my first post on LIW though I've been scouting it out for weeks. I'm looking to have my wedding in Sept - Nov of 2010 and we've just started researching...
This may be a strange question for my first, but has anyone used or seen one of those fake wedding cakes? I'm talking about the ones that look real but are really styrofoam with a little hidden compartment for real cake (for the cutting and feeding each other) and then you bring out sheet cake?
I heard you can save a lot of money by going that route, and I'm a bit intrigued by the whole idea of it.
Thanks!

I've heard of it, and then you get a $25 sheet cake from Costco to cut up in the back..but I really don't know the logistics of it!

Re: Fake Wedding Cakes
yes Cakes by Jay.. they range by size but this is very popular esp with platinum weddings..
the top tier that you and your FH cut is real and the remainder of the cake is fake..
and yes, you can easily get a flatsheet for your guests..
you can have your 4-5 tier glitz and glam ...
have your cake and eat it too !!

just need to find a baker who is very good at it, show a pic of your dream cake and VOILA... sometimes it is just as costly as a real cake... sometimes cheaper. depends how crazy or simple the cake is

Re: Fake Wedding Cakes
I never heard of that before, but it doesn't really sound that necessary to me. A lot of RH include the cakes. But if you're not going with that, you could definitely do something like this.
I have friends who are thinking of getting a small cake (think two layers) and do cupcakes instead (especially since the bride can't do dairy).
Kinda like this:

Re: Fake Wedding Cakes
My sister had one at her wedding - one of the advantages is that the cake can stay out the whole time because it doesn't need to be refrigerated. She used Macayla Michaels Dessert. The actual cake was just a plain white sheet cake.

Re: Fake Wedding Cakes
I heard about this a long time ago but this is the first time I'm hearing of it recently. When my brother was getting married 10 years ago I remember my sister in law mentioning that you can do this instead of getting a whole wedding cake. She ended up not doing it but you can really save a lot of money. My hall includes a cake, but for halls that don't include the cake this is a great option to get a great looking inexpensive cake!

Re: Fake Wedding Cakes
Here is what I found.. a few brides posted pics on their reviews that the cake they had was fake .. but i dont remember who...
******************************** With a fake wedding cake, you can get the look of a luxurious cake without the enormous price tag. A large, intricate wedding cake can put a big dent in your wedding budget. And much of the wedding cake usually goes to waste, as not every guest will actually eat cake.
However, the dilemma is that it looks tacky to just have a small wedding cake on the sweet table. Therefore, instead you can have a beautiful, elaborate fake cake for show, and a small sheet cake in the back kitchen to serve. The cost of a sheet cake is very inexpensive. So even added together with the price of a fake cake, you will generally still save you money.
