Re: Fan Programs

I like that, where did you find it. Not a bad idea for an outside wedding in the summer, people can fan themselves.

Re: Fan Programs

Sonia-
I made fans for my outdoor August wedding. I looked into all the sites that sold them and they were pretty expensive, so I decided to do it myself and it was very easy.

I bought heavy 110-card white stock paper at Staples and large tongue depressers at Michael's. (The paper was like $10, the depressers $3 or less). I also painted the depressers white with spray paint.

I used my laser printer at work to print each side. I used a computer program to create a heart shape outline, which I then put my text inside of. One side had our names and date of the wedding; the other side the program.

I then glued the sheets partially together (front to back) and cut along the heartshape line (so each side of the heart would match). Then I put the tongue depresser between the 2 sides and glued them permanently. The 2 sheets gave the fan enough weight. Any heavier paper and I wouldn't have been able to use my printer. I then bought lacy ribbon, tied small pieces into little bows and glued them on the bottom of the heart.

What was time consuming was hand cutting the heartshapes.
I did have help (retired parents) in the gluing but did my hand hurt with all that detailed cutting.

Still, it was worth it.

I have pictures. I will try to scan one for you.

Re: Fan Programs

Shell, you really are the crafty bride. Yes, I went to the website and after calculating the number of guests the price of the fan programs was over $750, yikes. I really like the idea of these fans especially since I am having an outdoor ceremony--If you scan a picture that would be great!!

I know. Isn't that outrageous? If I had bought the fans, I wouldn't have been able to do favors.

Here are the fans in their display basket. My SIL gave them out.

Here is a scan of an actual fan. Please forgive the quality, but with the ribbon on it, the scanner can't close all the way.

Re: Fan Programs

ohmigod! those look So amazing! that seems like a perfect idea. do you think that the paper you used would fit in a normal home laser printer? or was your work one more high-tech? i have a million questions though .. so look out for the FM closer to my wedding

Re: Fan Programs

ShellMArie, do you happen to have a template for the fans? Did you buy them, or make them yourself?

Re: Fan Programs

Thanks! And I did make them completely from scratch.

A regular sized HP Laserprinter was what I used. I recommend the laser over an inkjet because the laser is sharper. The card stock I used also came in pastel colors if you want to add color.

I used a design program called Quark Xpress, but you could just as easily use something like Microsoft Publisher. I can give anyone the Quark file to use as a template but it only works with Quark. But you really don't need a template.

The trick for me was to find a good heart shape that would fit my text and not be too top heavy on the tongue depresser. I had to experiment with a few hearts to get it right.

Also, I used a glue stick so the pages would stick together smoothly.

I set the page up landscape (the long way) and used clip art of a heart for the background. I only used the heart on ONE side of the design since it was only going to be my guide for cutting. If I had put it both sides it would have been really hard to line up. So I put the heart on the program side since that was the side with the most text and the side that I had to be very careful with when cutting.

After gluing the fans, I put them between heavy books to dry over night. Glued the fans two weeks before the wedding. Attached the ribbons the Monday before.

If anyone has any q's, ask away.
