father/daughter song for those who weren't that close?
I was reading another post where brides are choosing very emotional songs to dance to during the father/daughter dance. My problem is that I was NOT daddy's little girl. In fact, we hardly spoke even though we lived in the same house. To be perfectly honest, he wasn't that interested in what was going on in my life. In the last few years we've talked more and I forgive him for being so aloof. But just as I would never buy a mushy card for him, I don't want to dance a mushy song with him. Maybe we should skip the dance -- I won't pretend that we were close even for the wedding.. A few months ago I asked him thru e-mail if he wanted to dance to 'The way you look tonight' by Sinatra but he never responded. I feel like I missed out on a lot by not having a close relationship with my dad.

sorry that you are going through this...picking a song is hard enough!
If he didn't respond to your selection, then don't stress about it...pick what you want..but don't skip it, one day you will probably regret it.

my situation was kind of the opposite of yours...my father & i were very close while i was growing up - and then he did the whole midlife crisis thing & took off when i was older. I did a song that more or less talked about older mem'ries...and the lyrics were more HIM talking to ME rather than the other way around. Honestly I think 'The way you look tonight' would be nice. You wont regret or have any part of you be upset that u didn't do it - but it's something light & upbeat to enjoy the moment with. Also, are you close with your mom? I danced with my dad to a short semi-light hearted song, but danced with my mom to a very sentimental song since we were always so close.

I think he would be hurt if I skipped it but, honestly, the more I think about it the more I want to. But you are probably right -- I would probably regret it.
I didn't think about dancing with my mom - that might be very sweet.
Thanks for the suggestions

I pretty much have the same situation as you. My dad worked a lot and we never spoke much, and its still that way now. But he is a good dad, and always worked hard to provide for the family. I don't want anything mushy either and i was even thinking of doing the father/daughter mother/son dance at the same time so it wasn't just me and my dad dancing, but i know my mom will be offended that i'm not having it separate (like it won't be special) I'm still searching for the right song though. You are not alone!

I'm having a similar problem... I'm not dancing with my dad... I did invite him to the wedding and as far as I know he's coming, but he's not in it or walking me down the aisle or anything.
My grandfather who I was closest to passed away this past May, so I have my other grandfather walking me (both are my moms side though, grandpa who passed away was her father, grandpa who is walking me down the aisle is her step-dad)
Grandpa has been with grandma since before I was born, and he's been there for me my whole life growing up, but we're TOTALLY different in most things and we're not emotionally that close... so first I have to find a song suitable for a grandfather/granddaughter dance, then I have to make sure it's not too mushy or saying things about all the stuff you used to do together or how he's sad to give her away because none of the above applies lol. Picking songs is tough!!
I was thinking we'd do the Huckabuck, Frank Sinatra style.. and he liked that idea... but I found out that that word apparently has dirty meaning in todays world , so I think I might stick with 'Wonderful World' by Louis Armstrong, or 'I Hope You Dance' by Leann Womack...?
Good luck!!

I am not close with my father either.. and we danced to 'Isn't She Lovely' by Stevie Wonder.. It was a little more upbeat and my father twirled me around the dancefloor during the song.. it was really nice!!!

I'm in a similar situation. My parents are divorced and my mom raised me. He was part of my life as I grew up but he wasn't there for me the way a father should be. I personally don't want to dance with him at my wedding but everyone keeps telling me it's not the right thing to do and I shouldn't take that privilege away from him Whatever!!! But I'm going to dance with him anyway against my own will. I chose Daughters by John Mayer. Its not mushy at all. That's my suggestion to you if you are in need of a song.

After my mother died my father did some really horrible things..we weren't that close to begin with by any stretch of the means. I've decided to dance to 'I hope you dance'. Not mushy at all.. just saying that I hope you have a good life.
Good luck and you're not alone!!!

I'm not close with my dad either, our situation sounds like yours where I don't blame him for it, it's just a fact of life. However, I still wanted to dance with him at my wedding, I wanted to say that although he might not have always been there for me that he was there that day, I didn't want to have any regrets later on in life. I decided that we would dance to Butterfly Kisses which is sappy, but we cut out the Sweet 16 part so it was shorter. Another idea is to dance to a more upbeat song so you can dance together but don't have to be all mushy.

My dad and I weren't close, we were actually always arguing. He's done a lot for me over the years, but we are not a mushy family, so I picked the song To Sir, With Love by LuLu. It's nice but not too sappy. It just talks about the appreciation of having him watch you grow up. HTH!
