Has anyone ever done a charity donation instead of favors? How did it work out?

Re: favors
I have been to a wedding where they did a charity donation for a favor and some people were upset because they didn't appreciate the charity! I don't think it was their business which charity was chosen except that the card said 'in your name' so I guess they were concerned that it literally was-
I personally don't appreciate most wedding favors because they have the tendancy to collect dust

Re: favors
i went to a wedding in November that donated to a charity for their favors. But what they did was give a little favor box filled with Hershey kisses and attached was a tag with the donation. I thought this was a cute idea because people left with something too.

Re: favors
I think we're doing a candy favor and then a donation to a charity but we're just putting a small sign near the guest book. I'd like to do a donation to a local soup kitchen or shelter though instead of something national or to a disease.
Instead of an 'in your name' thing, it'll be more like 'In honor of our happiness, we'd like to share our good fortune by making a donation to XXXX. Thank you for making us so fortunate.' Or something like that. I'd rather see a couple do that than give me something I feel too guilty throwing away but have absolutely no use for.
