FDNY Wives

FDNY Wives

Hi ladies, I have a question. How is it being the wife of a NYC fireman? I know I've spoken to most of you girls a lot being that my husband is a member of the NYPD, but I'm wondering if there is much difference in being the wife of one versus the other. My DH is doing a lateral transfer in May and will be starting the NYC fire academy. I think I'm excited...I'm just not sure how to feel. I feel that although I'm frustrated w/his hours now(midnights)I know what it entails being that my dad is retired. This will be all new to me and it's a little scary! So, what do you girls think? Do you think it will be pretty much the same? Any advice you can offer will be appreciated...
Thanks!

Re: FDNY Wives

I am not the wife of a FDNY but my FH is a city fireman (union) in Saint Louis which is very much the same. Were you talking about the hours? Working 24hr shifts/ holidays the whole 9 yards is difficult, especially since they do heavy rescue and he is trained in Haz mat/ confined space rescue. Sometimes I worry about him, but ultimately I know what he is doing, makes him happy and he has never wanted to do anything else (his father was also a firefighter). He has gotten injured (to the point where he had to get surgury). He has seen some of his friends including his captain get seriously injured and even a cousin (also a fireman) recently died in a fire rescue. But what he does is important and essential. Everytime something like that happens, it makes me re-think things. Sometimes I wish he did something less stressful. I honestly try not to think too much about it. He loves what he does. I trust in all of the training he goes through and he promises me that he will never go and 'be the hero' without regard to his safety. I ask him about that sometimes. If he would make choices earlier in his career when he was single versus now after we get married. I believe he can perform in high pressure situations, and god willing, he will be alright and make the right decisions.
The hours sometimes can be a pain...and I miss him. But he also has his 4-days off which is nice.
Good luck to your DH. The fire academy is tough

I know the deal with the hours b/c as a cop he has crazy hours too. He has also dealt with difficult situations regarding his position as a cop especially b/c of 9/11. I'm also familiar with the risks involved with the job, I'm not really worried about that, I don't think much of that will be different. I guess I'm wondering if there's anything different b/t the relationship I have with my husband as a cop and the one I will have with him as a fireman. Will he change much? I know both cops and firemen have that 'wild party side' to them to an extent, is it worse with firemen then with cops? I don't know if I'm making sense with this post or not.....oh well!

Re: FDNY Wives

yeah, there is definitely a 'fraternity house' mentality that goes on in the firehouse. I am not sure if the NYPD get the same thing. These men are living together for 24 hrs at a time. The conversations and pranks can be crazy. I am lucky because he works with some great guys. Some of them are a bit psycho and cheat on their wives and preach the evils of marriage, they bring their 'woman on the side' to the firehouse. Some of the them are the nicer family men. They tell him all about the benefits of getting married. So, I guess like any job you get a mixture of both.
My mother always told me to stay away from cops and firemen because they were womanizers. oh well. Women like men in uniform.

I think that is part of what I'm talking about!! I have cousin married to firemen and b*tch a lot about those things and I guess I don't want to deal with it! The cops have a similar mentality though...there are badge bunnies everywhere lurking for our men in uniforms!!
Thanks!

Re: FDNY Wives

yeah, I know which ones are the 'bad' ones. they have even introduced me to their girlfriends..after I have socialized with their wives!
Rob knows that. I tell him, he can listen all he wants from the happily married guys for advice on whatever. Anything the other guys tell him, he can't listen to. It works for us
Did you ever see women go to a firehouse and flirt? Shameless. I know. And most firemen can't wear their wedding rings. For safety reasons with their gloves going on and off. My FFIL had to have his cut off because it got caught on the firetruck. He almost lost his finger! That makes it worse. But I don't worry about it. The ones that cheat will cheat. I have to trust him
