Feeding the Officiant??

Original post by Jajanyc

Does anyone know the etiquette regarding-- if you have to invite the Officiant to the reception when you are having the ceremony at the same place?

I am not feeding the officiant. I have only met him once before our wedding day.

Guess this is an old &debated topic.

We had 2 officiants...we paid for their meals & paid for ther transportation back & forth.

If you like the Officiant offer them to stay.
If not just pay him or her and b done w/it.
I offered and he stayed for the cocktail hr only.

It really is a nice gesture and good etiquette to offer for at least just the cocktail but not at all necessary for the entire event or really any of your event. It is a preference.

You should be feeding all of your vendors that stay during the event - FYI - It should not be costing you the same amount for your per head price. Double check this w/your Venue place.

Is an Officiant a vendor?? hum... depends how you look at it...it is all relative. Mine was 'HIRED' so he kinda fit into that category a bit.
Rent a MINSTER.

our temple rabbi is officiating and he and his wife will be invited like any other guest. he did my little sister's bat mitzvah, my confirmation, visited me in the hospital when my appendix had ruptured and has known my family for years. we are also inviting them to our rehearsal dinner, even though we won't really be 'rehearsing' (we will probably go over the basics of the ceremony though). it is up to them if they want to come.

In my view, I say feed them all. It can't hurt and I think they do a better job if they think that they're getting a meal deal out of it - never mind the fact that that you may be paying them a small fortune to be there....

flame me if you want but honestly, if my boss told me everydaY that the co. was buying me dinner just for being there, I would be more into my job. Really, I might even agree not to spend my days trolling LIW and actually doing my work.....

I am glad I read this! We are thinking of booking a judge who was recommended by our RH because our ceremony will be at the RH. We have not met him yet and were trying to decide if we need to meet with him in person before booking. I always thought it was expected that you invite the officiant but I see that some people have good reasons for not feeling obligated to. Hmm, I am still undecided about what we will do but this post helps!

Talk to your officiant about it! When we met with ours he said he normally does not stay for cocktail hour or the whole party. He was not rude about it but pretty much said he does this all the time (performs the ceremony/weddings) and really doesnt know anyone there!

So that being said we are not sending him an invite!
