feeling bummed about HM...sorry if its long

ok so FH and I really wanna go to Hawaii for our honeymoon. All along I have wanted to go to Hawaii and nothing else is really appealing to me.

we ideally want to do 2 nights in Oahu, 4 nights in Maui, and then 4 nights in Kaui.

we have gotten some quotes from travel agents and i am not sure we are going to be able to do this...we just worked with travel tom and we got a pretty good quote...but FH is saying its still too much bc we are gonna need a ton of additional money for food/drinks and excursions.

we could save money if we did 2 islands but i dont know which island i would cut out....and I dont know how else to really save. ( i guess staying at cheaper hotels but its our honeymoon so i dont wanna stay somewhere crappy)...so im not sure if hawaii is going to work.

i dont know what we should do...i have my heart set on hawaii

not sure if your FH wants to hear this cuz it may not be the most frugal advice, but here it is....

you dont pay for the hotels or excursions until you are there! by then the wedding will be over. you will have recieved $$$$ as gifts.

viola, problem solved!

as i said, its not frugal advice...but if this is something you really want...dont worry about it now. just worry about the down payments.

thanks! its true though. I keep saying that we only get one honeymoon we should do it how we want it.

Trust me, I had my heart set on Hawaii, too. But looking at prices, that is *quickly* changing. Personally, I'd rather go somewhere closer and less exotic (Miami? Bahamas?) and have a KICK A S S honeymoon suite with all the bells and whistles than to stay in a mediocre hotel just cause it's in Hawaii. Sorry to say, you guys are just going to have to compromise.

no i guess i don't NEED to...i just can't decide which i should cut. I mean of the three kauai is the most expensive so i could do Oahu and Maui only to save money....but i dont know that i wanna skip kauai. I guess FH and I need to look at our priorities and decide which islands are a must and which we could skip.

have you thought about doing a cruise? they have ones that hit up spots an ALOT of the islands...its a good (and economical !!) way to see all the islands. and the excursions are awesome! (or so my friend told me...i have not gone)

you dont have to cut out the most expensive.
just try and figure out which one you will get the most out of.
try and figure out which has the best hotel food/drinks and excursions.

yeah i would love to....but i get majorly sea sick and have never been on a cruise. I would hate to pay all this money and then end up getting sick and having a terrible honeymoon.

I was going to say what pp said: have you looked into any cruises? You'd still be able to island hop and do excusions, but the majority of your meals and drinks would be covered on the boat.

Where are you staying in Kauai? There is a Mariott resort there that is really nice and not as ridiculous as the Hyatt or a few others. Also, there are lots of local places there - you definitely can save on meals and things by not eating at the resorts.

FH and i are in the same boat as you. we figure if anything we can break our hm into two vacations. we would vacay someplace cheaper llike florida for the hm and then like 6months later we would go to the places that we really wanted to go. We figure we will enjoy our mini hm and then really enjoy our dream hm. If you dont wanna do it that way you could always postphone the hm til you guys have more money and are able to do what you really want. It ***** but im sure you will make it work. Good luck.

we are going to do the cruise because it was the cheapest way to island hop. besides, i love cruises, so that was an added bonus.

eta: sorry i didnt read through everything-i used to always get sea sick too, but i take bonine, and it helps so much-plus the ships are so big that honestly you really dont feel anything

Re: feeling bummed about HM...sorry if its long

What about a Hawaiin cruise? I went on one a few years ago and there were a ton of Honeymooners. This way you cut out the cost of traveling between islands because the ship will take you; your food is already covered and all you have to worry about would be drinks & exursions.

You still get to see the islands if you plan your days properly to make the most out of your time there.

If you did island hopping like you said; 2 nights in Oahu; 4 in Maui; 4 in Kuai. I would personally cut out the 2 nights in Oahu-is that for travel? This way you can land in Oahu settle and then go on to the other islands? I preferred Maui & Kaui over Oahu-except that you'll miss Pearl Harbor. (sorry i'm no help)

But i know how frustrating the $$ aspect of things can be. You just don't want to go all the way to Hawaii and only stay for only 5 nights; you loose 2 in travel alone. AND it's your honeymoon so you don't want to stay it rinky dink hotels just to save money.

talk to your FH about $...i think you should just do it all, the way you want to, for you HM.

good luck!!

Re: feeling bummed about HM...sorry if its long

Sorry i didn't read down all the posts to see cruises make you sick.

I would do Kaui & Maui-there is a reason why Kaui is slightly more pricey-it just had a more secluded; exotic feel then Oahu. Oahu just from what i saw for the 2 days i was there was beautiful; but also seemed more touristy. Beach was crowded; big malls; chain restaurants. You'll get more of an polyenisian island feel on the other two.

we were hesitant on spending $ on hawaii too but in the end we decided to go for it since it will be a once in a lifetime trip. we stuck w/ 2 islands, oahu and maui, i know we will have a great time. i think if its what you want to do then do it... plus you'll have $ after the wedding for your food/excursions.

09er crashing. What is your budget? There are definitely ways to save. FH and I have gone to Hawaii twice before (once together and once separately) and we're going back for our HM.

Yes, excursions can be very expensive in Hawaii. However, you don't need to do them. Some of the best memories of our trip was just snorkeling on a beach. We had a collapsible cooler with us. We stopped at a market on each island and bought stuff to make PB&J sandwiches and drinks and snacks. We took it in the car with us and if we were out exploring, we had picnics on the beach or in the mountains. It was super-romantic and we saved a ton of $$$.

Don't be scared by people saying it's expensive. To be honest, we didn't find it all that much more expensive that NYC prices. Here on LI, we're used to things being expensive so it wasn't sticker shock.
